Try Lord of the Rings.....

There are a few black people...on the other continent. The Dothraki aren't white.

Westeros is like North America without the slave trade

reply

Indeed.

By the way, I'm not making definitive statement here. I'm simply opening up discussion based on an interesting article, which also takes a balanced view.

In fact the article ends with a fascinating contribution from Michael Harriot, from The Root, a GOT fan who doesn't find the show's racial politics particularly problematic.

reply

Did you watch the funny video about LOTR?

For a bunch of white people in Westeros, many of them sure are scumbags....

reply

Westeros's history is based on that of England, both countries were invaded by wave after wave of conquerors, that resulted in ethnic conflict hardening into a nasty class system. The Picts, the Celts, the Saxons, and the Normans... are fictionalized as the First Men, the Sevenists, and the Targaryans.

If you don't like watching a lot of white people, this show is not for you.

reply

Michael Harriot, from The Root, agrees with you.

reply

It seems like the only properties that are held to these high standards are the most successful ones. No one cares if a lowly YouTuber fails to strive for equal representation. That audit is reserved for GOT and Star Wars

reply

A 'lowly YouTuber'?

I'm not sure what you mean. But if you're saying that a one-man/one-woman YouTuber with zero resources, operating a channel from their spare room, and doing nothing more spectacular than speaking to the camera about their passion for health food or video games, should be held to the same level of account as the producers and showrunners of multi-million-dollar franchises when it comes to representation, then I think you're being a tad unreasonable.

reply

It's true. Nobody cares about random youtubers or bloggers, in fact most of those people have to beg people to watch or read their output, but a huge percentage of the population cares about these big hit franchises. Millions want to be part of the phenomenon, they want to be part of the fun, and some get miffed when they feel left out or excluded.

And it's not like there isnt room for diversity in casting, on a show with dozens of major roles.

reply

Not exactly what I’m saying but why should a popular show on a big network be held to different standards? The only reason people start demanding certain things from shows like this is bc it’s so popular.

Stop policing art!

reply

But surely shows with higher budgets, and larger and more diverse fanbases do have a greater responsibility than lowly YouTubers and niche programmes.

reply

Why?

reply

Because you have the money and resources to spend on such concerns. Plus, your show is seen by several millions meaning that, whether you like it or not, it shapes popular culture.

reply

So casting people of color is more expensive? Why should being popular or lucrative obligate the show to hire based on anything other than artistic choice? Does GOT instantly lose their right to make their own choices once it’s popular?
I really think real world things like employment, housing, equality etc should be concentrated on more than a fantasy tv show

reply

who cares

reply

Jesus Christ...can't people just enjoy a show anymore?

Is everything just a constant quest to find out who or what is racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, islamaphobic, etc., etc., etc.

It must suck to wake up everyday just looking for shit to be offended by.

I can't wait for the final season! CAN'T WAIT!!!

reply

Read the article. Most of the people commenting aren't offended.

reply

You pot stirrer you

reply

The same goes the other way. People like you complaining about movies being too "politically correct" when many times, they really aren't. I'm not saying that this applies to you personally, but people on both sides of the political spectrum, left and right, just love to moan and it is equally as nauseating either way. Just STOP!

reply

The part where I'm different, is that I'm not on either side of the political spectrum. I can't stand the extremists on either side of politics. I'm hanging out somewhere in the middle.

But that being said, I do despise over the top political correctness, and people who are supposedly so against all the "isms" in the world, but yet are so obsessed with them that they will find ANY reason to bring them up to people all day long. Many or most times when it just isn't warranted.

I will fight back against that all day long until the day I die. I find it to be the ultimate form of hypocrisy...which to be fair, politics is full of.

It might be racist, but it's VERY pro-gay sex.

reply

It is based on European history and legends. It makes sense.

That said, there have been actors on the show who have been Samoan, Asian, and Middle Eastern.

reply

This show is racist against white walkers.
