All you have to do is kill the Night King...

...and all those tens of thousands of Wights will drop dead, and problem solved.

Did they not think of that when they wrote it? My father is predicting this will happen, and he is already disappointed at the thought. I agree, it would be a VERY convenient deus ex machina, wouldn't it?

Yeah, well that's a standard plot device in the sci-fi, fantasy, vampire, and horror genre. Whenever the writers come up with an enemy that the heroes can't possibly beat, they pull the old kill-the-ruler-of-the-monsters-or-zombies-or-ghosts-and-you-win trope out of their asses.

I'd say the odds of seeing it here are good, even though there are many White Walkers, and presumably one or all could take over from the Night's King.

That's what I thought about. Because Beric said it to Jon Snow, all he has to do is kill the Night King, but Jon said to him, "no,you don't understand..."

It could turn out to be true, but also true that the Night King can't be killed the same way as the other White Walkers. In that episode "The Door" they tried to protect the cave with a wall of fire but he walked up to it and it went out.

Well, if they are going to use the old kill-the-leader-and-the-unbeatable-army-stops idea, at least they've put in some groundwork. Like at Hardhome, when the Night's King raised his arms and all the dead humans got up and became part of his army of the dead, he's obviously a highly powerful magical being and the good guys have no equivalent magical being on their side so he's going to be REALLY hard to kill.

Still, if he's what I suspect - a personification of universal or natural forces, you'd think one of the other White Walkers would assume his power if he were destroyed. I think the Night's King may actually be one of the Old Gods, and how do you kill a God? That which he personifies still exists.

I've been saying this for years, the White Walkers are the most pathetic "threat" ever. Even Sam can kill a white walker boss

reply

Oh man. Wouldn't surprise me, with how bad and lazy the writing has gotten.

They may have ruined the story in season 7, but I thought that in season 8 we would at least get an amazing epic huge battle with the white walkers. But maybe we won't even get that? Prepare yourselves for disappointment.

Drogon could’ve fire torched him.

Similar to Independence Day. What technologically-advanced civilization designs their invasion force so that taking out the mothership disables all other ships?

And you're right about GoT. You would think that the humans would have at least considered this possibility, and sent a few excursion teams in to attempt an assassination. Especially now that they have the Dragon Glass. Make some arrows tipped with the glass, and kill him from long range.
