Final Season Pushed Back To 2019? Is This True?

Does anyone know? This seems outrageous and unbelievable to me. Please tell me that this is bullshit.

They haven't really made any secret that this was going to happen, only now it's "official". Not much they can do, movie quality sets, locations and special effects take time, and a whole season of GOT is like 3 or 4 movies of runtime. It just takes a while to do. I don't mind as long as it's good.

Nor do I, I simply was under the impression that 2018 was the final year.

And thank you for your reply.

Much as I respect HBO as the Tiffany premium non-airwaves channel, I am starting to have a problem with then creating a non-annual paradigm for their Signature serial series, which means, Game of Thrones and Westworld. HBO did not use this paradigm for The Sopranos, The Wire, The Larry Sanders Show nor Veep. I appreciate the imperative of quality and integrity over just chugging stuff out, but am I to conclude that HBO is shifting the serial pay TV paradigm away from reliable seasonal viewing and to the we'll-show-you-when-we're-ready paradigm? If so, this is atypical of serial TV. This may work. This may also piss off a lot of subscribers. A significant number of HBO subscribers, and HBO knows this, are there because of GoT. How many will drop the service until 2019?

Only 6 episodes in the final season with some episodes with a longer running time than normal, expect alot of battles and CGI, the battles are probally why its taking so long.

I agree with you, R_Kane. If a series goes too long without episodes, I forget what happens! Of course, I can rewatch the episodes, but would rather not.

I do want the final season to be awesome, so I guess I don't mind waiting, but like you, I prefer the seasons to be annual.

There's a HUGE difference between The Sopranos, The Wire, The Larry Sanders Show, and Veep and Game of Thrones. The first four shows are all Earth-based and occur during our era. That means lots of "routine" type sets (restaurants, office spaces, homes) that can be decorated with off-the-shelf furniture. That means lots of location shooting, so existing locations can be used so things do not have to be build from scratch. And, it means very little in the way of CGI and post-production processing.

Contrast that to Game of Thrones, which happens on some mythical worlds, full of period pieces, exotic locations, and even furniture, clothing, and settings that have to be entirely built from scratch. The location shooting that they do do is located well outside of the United States, meaning you've got to get cast and crew to Iceland and goodness only knows where else. And with the plot revolving around what will be epic battles, hundreds of extras, and heavy use of CGI, each episode of GoT probably spends as much time in post-production as the entire SEASON of any of those other shows.

As someone who loves GoT, I would MUCH rather have them take the time so I can fully immerse myself in an environment that feels real and solid, than have them rush for the sake of maintaining a yearly schedule and receiving a poor product.

Just my humble two cents... but I would bet every, single episode of GoT poses as many production problems as entire seasons of those other shows.

Will be worth the wait. My understanding is that each episode will be about 80 minutes or longer. So basically each episode is a movie. So they have to make 6 movies and with the amount of production shooting these episodes, that takes time.

1) It's reasonable. They're basically making six movies. It takes Pixar three years each. Many live action films today are four to six months just filming, not including post.
2) They have to consider timing of the new books.
3) They don't want anything against Westworld. They will test it on its own for a year and keep going or axe it.
4) With today's streaming, they need more extra features to sell the box set and more shooting time to fit in behind the scenes specials etc.
