"Surely you weren't expecting to be rewarded?"

"No. But Maestor, .....please don't call me Shirley."

Surely, copying old decaying manuscripts is a promotion (possibly multiple promotions) over scrubbing the bedpans of and delivering meals to invalids, right? It's actually work vital to the library. Why be so glum about it?

He's already found the information about the dragon glass and the cache of it beneath Dragonstone, so he's (at least partially) fulfilled his purpose for going to Oldtown in the first place. And how much do you want to bet that he finds some useful information in the scrolls he was tasked with copying?

I think the Sam-as-comic-relief theme could probably be toned down a bit. He ought to have been enthusiastic about the new job Professor Slughorn gave him, not depressed.

Sam the Slayer, he can kill White Walkers using a shiny rock he dug up. He can cure the most infectious deadly diseases in Westeros with nothing but a shot of rum and an instruction manual. But he is ultimately defeated, due to extreme fear of paper mites.

reply

Naaah, he'll just pack his things and go back to Winterfell with Gilly.
He still has a role to play in discovering Jon's true heritage.

reply

He can also help convince Dany of the white walkers if he goes there and Jorah is there too.

reply

What did he do with the Valerian steel sword he reclaimed from his family?

No, he's going to do something else heroic and absolutely vital to the fight against the Night's King, and then he's going to become archmaester and write the history of the whole shebang. I called it ages ago, of all the POV characters he's the most likely to survive the war between the living and the dead.

1. That sword (named Heartsbane, worth millions in our money) is just waiting to make a big appearance near the finale, along with Longclaw, Widow's Wail, and Oathkeeper. And maybe Baelish's assassin dagger as well. Valerian steel rocks.

2. Of course, because he is the alter ego of GRRM.

reply

Yeah, but is Heartsbane waiting in Sam's lodgings where it's no use to anyone, or did he send it to Jon Snow or Dolorous Edd? If he hasn't sent the sword north so someone can actually use it to fight, he should.

Bugger any desire he might have to prove his manhood in combat, he's most useful to the war effort as a researcher, and possibly as a medic. He should loan the sword to someone who can use it effectively.

reply

Exactly, he should be exalted at the chance of not only looking at old manuscripts, but also preserving them by making new copies, which is master trust him to do accurately.
