Lady Olenna

I sure did find this woman entertaining...not sure about you all. But I adored her run on this show.

One of the funniest scenes for me was when she was meeting with Margery and the Septa was present. She wanted to get rid of her so badly so she says:

"You are not in your sanctuary my dear. All I have to do is whistle and my men will stroll in here and bash you about. And continue to bash you until I say stop. You probably need a good bashing."

lol So funny.

Anyone else have their own favorite Lady Olenna moments?

reply

Pretty much every time that she was on-screen. Dame Diana Rigg is a consummate Shakespearean actress, and she was the only Bond girl whom 007 married.

reply

She is truly magnificent. I adore this woman!

reply

Funny that nobody mentioned her most prominent role, as Emma Peel on the The Avengers TV series. I love the scene where we see the KGB file covers on our favorite spies:

John Steed's file: "Dangerous. Handle With Care."
Emma Peel's file: "Extremely Dangerous. Do Not Handle At All."

Feared by the KGB, conquered James Bond's heart, decimated the Lannister clan. That's Dame Diana Rigg, one of the all-time screen greats.

reply

Diana Rigg has been AWESOME longer than I've been alive!

reply

She steals every scene she is in.

I forget the specific dialogue but I love when she shut down the Sand Snakes when they were interrupting her and Ellaria.

reply

She definitely wasn't afraid of anyone. I guess when you're that old and rich...why would you be? lol

Loved her.

reply

I love every scene with Diana Rigg but, you're right, that is a great one.

reply

I always liked her and her no-nonsense straight-talking. And killing Joffrey was a plus too. She was one of my favorite characters.

reply

Yes she did kill that bastard and that's a huge plus on my list. And I'm glad she admitted to it and I sure as hell hope Jaime runs right back to Cersei and tells her everything!

reply

I love Diana Rigg. Also she was such style icon back in the 1960's. https://youtu.be/idtYckLIZnI To this day, when I buy clothes, I think about what she wore in The Avengers.

reply

The (REAL) Avengers! I love you! Do you know who it was that Diana replaced as John Steed's partner on that show? Honor Blackman, who left the series for the opportunity to play Pussy Galore in "Goldfinger." In the future, Diana left for the opportunity to play Tracy in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," yet another Bond film, the first without Connery. Do you know where her Avengers character's name came from? Emma Peel? It was a pun on a marketing phrase of the era: m-appeal, meaning "male appeal." How much m-appeal does this program have, advertisers? With Diana Rigg in the cast, The Avengers had more m-appeal than a hummer on cocaine.

reply

Yes-- to all those things-- I read them on line. (and whatever did we do before the internet?)
Here's her first scene in the show ever https://youtu.be/v4g3zvz8fgo

She was a one of kind- sophistication, athleticism and elegance. I used to watch the show in syndication during the early 1970's when I came home from school. When Linda Thorson took over for Diana Rigg, I just lost all interest entirely. They should have just ended the show when Diana Rigg left.

But the clothes in the show were amazing (okay- they way they fit her was amazing too). Really -- to this day-- so much of my own personal style comes from that show.

GOT was lucky to get Diana Rigg-- she steals EVERY SINGLE SCENE.

reply

Thanks for sharing the video, it was great! She had a coquettish elvish quality to her beauty back then!

reply

That said I'm left wondering where the Tyrell army was?

Had Daenerys consolidated the Tyrell Army on Dragonstone or were they defeated when Jaime marched the Lannister army south to Highgarden? The original plan was to lay siege to King's Landing with the Dornish forces, but with the Dornish leadership cut off where did the Tyrell army go? They weren't wiped out on Greyjoy's ships were they?

reply

No idea really. I'm confused by that and how quickly everyone is getting around this season. I mean I can thankfully forgive them for taking liberties with time...but just last week Lady Olenna was at Dragonstone and then all of a sudden she's home.

reply

Yes, I agree. It's like they have transporter beam technology as in Star Trek.

reply

It skipped over the battle but, from the way they talked, it was evident that a battle had taken place. There must have been at least some Tyrell forces present. But yeah it was a bit vague for my tastes. The show's recent sparseness with details is one of the consequences of the show outpacing the books, as well as GRRM's reduced role in the show itself.

reply

I think it's more like the fact that there are only two seasons left and they have a lot to cover. I saw in an interview that seasons 7 and 8 would move a lot faster than the previous ones, and we're seeing this already (and I love it).

reply

I guess, but I'm not really happy about it, honestly. I like GRRM's meticulous detail, fleshing out everything that's going on. It's starting to feel a bit rushed. I can understand the need to move it a little faster, but maybe not quite so fast.

reply

I agree.

I mean, we’ve seen Casterly Rock AND Highgarden for the first time in all those years, and it felt like watching a movie on fast-forward. And it’s strangely done… Tyrion presenting the plan while we see it being carried out. That worked well on "Life of Brian", but it felt kinda wrong on GoT.

reply

GRRM is so meticulous that he risks croaking before he finishes the books.

reply

Yeah only 10 episodes left, 4 more this season plus the 6 in the final season.

reply

The only information about the battle came from Lady Olenna when she was informed by Jamie that Tyrell army didn't put up a good fight. She said: "that was never our forte"

But in the end she had her last personal victory when she informed Jamie that she had Joffrey poisoned. At least she got that satisfaction.

reply

The showrunners also said it in "behind the episode" that the Tyrells would be no match for the full Lannister army. What they wanted to do with those scenes was show that everything played out according to Tyrion's expectations all the way up to the point where it went horribly wrong. This was meant to be a surprise both for Dany's side and for the audience. What they showed in the promos made it look like Dany would have no problem conquering Westeros, but after seeing the full episodes, it appears the playing field is more even.

Olenna told Dany if she wants to survive, she should ignore clever men and be a dragon. Olenna went along with Tyrion's plan and it got her killed. This sets Dany up in the coming episodes to go with her advice and be a dragon.

reply

I think the scene with Tarly and Jaime together meant that at least some, if not most, of the Tyrell army had switched sides.

reply

She went out like an O.G. "Tell Cersei I want her to know it was me". Fuck Yeah Lady Olenna! LOL drop mic.

reply

lol! Hell yeah! I want to see the look on that bitch's face when she hears of Lady Olenna's confession.

reply

She is so charismatic, the best actress in the show.

reply

And that's saying something on THIS show.

reply

She's one of my favorite characters along with Margery, they will be sorely missed. But I loved her exit on the show, she truly delivers and can still sting like a viper.

reply

Another favorite Lady Olenna moment for me was when she met Brienne.

"My word! Aren't you just marvelous! Absolutely singular!"

That always made me chuckle.
