What she whispers to him at the end....

....I understand it's obviously intended to be ambiguous and left up to the viewer to decide what she whispered to him at the end and then giggled about, but does anybody have any ideas what was perhaps said? Love some educated opinions.

Hi, just watched this and thought it was great. Reminded me very slightly of Punch Drunk Love with Adam Sandler, another quirky, oddball but ultimately, redemptive, romantic and realistic film. I thought at the end she may have whispered her secret about what her father had done to her and also that she had feelings for him (the boyfriend) too! Confronting her abuser was cathartic for her and she was trying to work on closure. I thought that bit was very moving.

I kind of thought that she told him about her father, but may have said something comical at the end. When people are vulnerable about things, they usually top it off with a joke or something to "save" them. If you notice, Jason Ritter wipes his eyes too.

I don't think it had anything to do with the father. What kind of phrasing could she have put that would be so quick? It has to have something to do with them getting back together, and possibly her feelings for him. Put in soft core Good Dick terms.

reply

I agree. I can't picture her saying, "My father molested me" and then him nodding and her smiling as they both cry. That would be a much bigger conversation I would imagine, with very different reactions. I think she basically told him that she wanted to be with him. Or that she wants to try and make it work with him. Or that she misses him. Something that lets him know she wants to move on with her life, with him.

reply

Except for that Punch Drunk Love is funny, surprising and interesting too watch.

reply

I don't think they are laughing, as she's obviously tearing up, and he wipe's his eyes as well. I think it was more "I'm ready for a relationship now if you are". JMO

I just finished watching this and while I don't think it's the real answer, I think it's the closes.

I would have to agree. It looked to me like he started crying pretty hard, which isn't a surprise, considering how much he'd put up with to get to that moment.

I personally think she was calling him on the fact that his "dead great-Aunt" didn't live in her building. Her seeing the old woman she thought was the great-Aunt was part of her overall revelation montage that triggered her to stand up to her father. Rather than being upset that she was lied to, she likely realized that he lied to her to force her to let him into her life. And he did so because he saw value in her.

By leading with this, that probably would have made both of them laugh, and in turn she probably could have made some verbal gesture about her overall feelings for him, or that she was ready for him, or apologizing, or something like that, hence the ensuing emotional aspect and tears and embracing.

I seriously don't think that a splurge revelation about her dad and sexual abuse and telling her dad off would have made them both laugh and cry.

I don't think she realized that the old lady was not his great-aunt. I think at that moment when the old lady said a general "hi" and she replied like anyone else would that he has had such an impact on her life that she can do everyday thing like reply. It shows her sitting on her balcony smoking when she would have been indoors with all the windows closed as if thinking that she can handle more of everyday life and she goes out and gets a normal job, gets her own place and gets herself set up before going back to show him.

reply

No, I believe you're mistaken. It's a very clear reference to her earlier statement that she often saw his 'great-aunt' while she was getting her mail. I think what she realized is that he made a very deliberate effort to make contact with her, as opposed to just 'passing by'.

reply

Yeap exactly good observation lastchance

Well thought out; articulate; great input.

I like your reply. Interesting take.

I thought it might've been "I'm ready for you to kiss my thighs now"...

no, kidding...I agree with lenbonk, something about being ready for a relationship & maybe a quick apology since they kiss & hug shortly after...

I think she said you have a good dick. Not being funny. I seriously think that's what she said

reply

I think she asks him if she can move in with him now that she no longer has that fine apartment.

Seriously, though, I think she lets him know she loves him too.

reply

I think she said something like, "Let's go surf netflix for a movie that loses absolutely nothing even though we have to fast-forward through half of it." LOL Seriously, when you hear the music start, the character staring into space or shuffling along looking at his feet, just hit FF until you see people talking again. ...or just skip this movie.

reply

She said, "I know you wont believe this... but Tom Arnold raped me."

reply

Bigdumbgeek! if you really FF through the dramatic pauses then you shouldn't be watching films at all! no wonder you didn't like it..YOU DIDN'T GET IT!

reply

HAHAHAHAHA oh god that was brilliant!

reply

"Do you still love me?"

reply

Yes, this, or maybe "I think I love you, too." Something along those lines. Either way brings huge emotional release for both of them.

A difficult movie about two very broken people, but a powerful and rewarding one just the same.

reply

I'm kinda iffy about this, I kind of have a feeling it was a quick, "I WAS molested" (he does ask her if she was molested or raped and she quickly denies it) and maybe something like "I would really like to tell you about it someday" because he does cry and shake his head like he's agreeing to something. Then maybe she says, "and by the way I know you didn't have a great aunt you *beep* *beep* because she does clearly realize that he lied about the great aunt. Anyways that's just my guess. I also like the guess that she says, "you have a good dick." That would be a good reason for the title.
