Questions (spoilers)

I am surprised there are so few posts here and hoped these would already covered here!

I came in half way through, so some of these questions may seem elementary. Sorry.

What was it about her past we were supposed to be re-visiting?
I thought the bloody sheets for some kind of DNA something, but they are part of the ritual? What ritual? Was the old woman real? Was the baby even real?
What's with the dude in chains and his face? Were those burns, or was he "dying"?

I guess I am just confused as to what was real and what wasn't. Theories and answers are welcomed!

You better understand I'm in love with myself Myself My beautiful self

you got to watch it from the beginning, i tried watching it from the middle, then i just ended up confused, so i dvr'd a later showing of it. i still have questions i need answered and i saw it from the beginning! i must say it was really creepy and i've been looking for a good creepy film for a long time now. it was a little slow, but i think it was what was needed to see things through the main characters eyes. i can answer one of your questions...her past was her child hood friend who she would talk to across their windows. he ended up killing himself or something and she, as a little girl, looked over at his window and saw a creepy old lady come out of the shadows and looked at her and smiled. she was so scared that she became angoraphobic or whatever it is she had.

The old lady was in Lee's imagination. So was the bloody foot that she saw from under the bed, as well as the hand that grabbed her arm. Basically, anything that vanished into nothingness was just a projection of her imagination.

The creepy dude in chains was real. He drove up in a car at one point and then he was on the ground twitching for a while and then he seemed really creepy. Maybe he was possessed?

The old lady was the same lady she saw in her neighbor's bedroom when she was a girl and he was a boy who killed himself. There are a lot of flashbacks of a boy and a girl but they're really not explained. It's implied a little that she was hiding in a drainage tube when something happened, and that part of her bizarre phobia may have something to do with suppressed memories.

Early in the film she watches a video that had been taped by her husband, that has some discussion of virgin sacrifices, and especially how the sacrifice of a newborn infant can be particularly powerful. It's implied that Nick is selling the baby to some satanic group that is sacrificing the baby. And that they've chosen the house as a location because of its history and the presence of spirits there.

There's a lot in the film that's not explained well. The above consists of my guesses, for the most part.

Good guesses there, Rick. Helps me out, anyway - I came in about 15 min into the movie, and the build up was decent, as others have said, but the end was just too disjointed and unexplained. I'm all for atmospheric ambigous stories, but this was just poor editing or poor writing, or both.

Didn't hate it, but it could have been better.

At least it wasn't the same old thing.

I just saw this flick and I agree with posters synopsis of the film. The husband even interviewed some woman who is into rituals but she mentioned that virgin sacrifices were the best but no one does that anymore. So he might have gotten the idea about the sacrifices from her. He needed a way to get money. I actually thought he married his wife because she was a virgin and they were going to use her. And he brought that house knowing the history of it. He implies they did not bother her because of him. But I feel that was his original intention. Instead he found some poor girl who was pregnant who needed money. But this is where the movie is inconsistent. I thought he needed money, so how could he have paid the woman for the baby? Unless he was getting paid a whole lot of money for the baby by these people.
See for this movie to work so have to believe all of that mumbo jumbo. See I just thought it was about her being gas lighted by her husband, who I never trusted. But who knew this was about rituals and virgin sacrifice. A very poorly written movie.
