What was the purpose if the Ark?

It was created by the ancients and it's only function was to brainwash people into thinking whatever you want them to. Yet when the Ori were attacking, the ancients didn't want to use it "as a weapon". What other use would a brainwashing machine have OTHER than a devastating weapon? Why create it at all? If they didn't create it to be used as a weapon, was it's original intended purpose?

C'monnnnn! Anybody? :P

reply

It'd be good fun at parties. :)

He who lives by the sword gets shot by those who don't.

reply

It's original purpose was to avoid using a weapon, and simply FORCE everyone to see the truth so the Ori could be defeated. However they decided it was unethical to use when it was actually completed - which was the scene you saw in the actual movie.

reply

Yeah, it looked like the opinions were divided on it when it came to crunch time.

reply

There is such good political satire in that scene. The ancients would not have passed a "Patriot Act" either I don't believe.

reply

I thought the one cat that had the stargates in his notebook invented it, but the other ancients decided not to use it, I didn't get the feeling they all developed it together.

reply

Thanks all! :D

reply

Probably not. What I've been musing about, is what if I had an ark to point at religious fundies, whatever the religion. The only answer I can come up with is, Of course I would! And these fundies aren't even trying to totally enslave or kill everyone. What were they thinking?!

"The men people admire are daring liars; those they most detest are men who speak the truth"

reply

but the thing we have to remember is that the ark can only change people to the truth, not the users POV

reply

Ah, but Upor, you will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly upon a certain point of view.

reply

Touche ;)

But take into account the whole evolution v divine will argument.

ALOT of people believe that God made us the way we are a few thousand years before now, but there is STRONG evidence that life existed millions of years before and that we have evolved from aemoba or what not. So basically, the people who believe that our origin is with God, and not science could possibly not use the ark to change us others since there is strong scientific basis in the theory of evolution.

Or the Ancients could have just stuck us here, who knows....

reply

Go away and think about it, maybe it will come to you sometime.

The whole series was about different races etc., all trying to convert people to their 'beliefs'. The Goa'uld wanted people to worship them. There are all these religions in the world competing to rule the world, but all of them have an agenda. The 'Ancients' were worried about what would happen if people didn't have some religion to follow without understanding that the only really important issue is 'Truth' and the 'Ark' contained the Light which exposed the truth to them. That all their so called 'religions' were a lie. I think it was a brilliant ending, no pun intended.

the ancients created gazillion weapons that could have won all the wars but they were too chicken to use any of it.

reply

Yeah the ancients came up with all sorts of things. But yeah, they were generally misused, not used when they should have been, or didn't work right at all. And the weird thing is, they never think to get rid of these things afterwards, they just leave them lying around.

reply

What was the purpose of the Ark?

To be used on people like you, who question such things and are in need of knowing The Truth.

Anyway, the Ancient known as Amelius - who also invented the stargate - invented the ark because they were desperate to find a means of survival while maintaining their freedom and free will. After meeting with other Ancients (well, technically, they were called Alterans at the time), they agreed to not use it.

It was simply a matter of one person creating it as an option, then discussing that option with others, and then deciding to not use it. There's nothing else to it.
