Real Goof [Spoiler]

When she is with the black dude on the couch.....she plays slide guitar left-handed but all the other times she is showed playing right-handed.

You know, I have been playing guitar for like 6-7 yrs now......and which is why I know how much of a superman/superwomen you have to be just to be able to learn guitar in a month or two let alone being able to play both left & right handed.

reply

Doesn't she also mention something about humbuckers on the phone? It's a Strat for god's sake!

reply

Since you mentioned it......now I remember her talking about Humbucker pickup.......
"--I Wanna Change The World But God Doesn't Share The *beep* Source Code!!--"

reply

The humbucker they were talking about was (what I think to be) the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails pickup which is a humbucker that goes in the slot for a single coil. It was in the guitar in the shop window, too... Which is plausible since these pickups have been around since the early 80's.

When she signs the slips, she uses her left-hand. I guess they only thought that they should make her be a left-handed guitar player after some scenes had been shot already. I'm left handed and when I learned to play the guitar, I tried it the normal way for a few weeks but finally had to ask a friend to inverse the strings so I could play it the other way around, because it was really hard to use my right hand to do the hard work.
As for her becoming really good in such a short time, that didn't bother me, it's part of the suspension of disbelief in this film, I really don't see it as a goof at all.

I think you might mean "Faust-like" or "faustian". Faust made a deal with the devil for his success. I don't think that's the point of this film.

Dude, sorry. I'm just too used to reading really frightening spelling on this board. Way to over-react though. And congratulations on your accomplished family?
And no, I don't know who Feist is. Which makes me the ignorant one.

SmashingBumskin, indeed that reply was meant for the Angry Cut-Off Arboreal Rodent. However, thanks for your post which poured oil over troubled waters.
Congratulations on being the non-cliché in your family (now, a fake-blonde breast-enhanced father and a sister who runs around with a younger gold-digger would really be something to gloat about). And congratulations on your terrific bottom epidermis!

I didn't recognize the particular amp in that scene, but there is nothing especially unbelievable about a guy in a park having a battery-powered amp.

Even if it was a blooper, that sort of thing happens quite a bit in movies, since the sound isn't really a concern when they are filming because it will be looped in during editing. If you look on the trivia pages for some movies, you'll see lots of notes on props that weren't plugged in. Phones are especially bad, since the phone isn't even on when the actor is talking into it, so no one checks that the cord from the base unit is actually plugged into anything. Computer monitors, keyboards and mice are also often shown with no cables or with cables going nowhere.

I agree on the right- versus left-handedness thing. At first, I was thinking that she was just learning righty because her training video was probably taught righty and maybe she switched once she picked up the basics. But, it happens too much and her handedness is portrayed inconsistently in the movie.

Does anyone know if Saffron Bellows is left-handed? My guess would be that many scenes were blocked and directed not taking that into consideration (especially in the childhood flashbacks), but it becomes sort of obvious when she signs her delivery slips that she's lefty.

If she had never played an electric guitar, were we to believe she knew about grounding properly and not managing to get herself electrocuted in the process?

Major goofs like this really annoy me!

reply

You can be ambitexturous of course. I'm a lefty guitarist and at lefty at handwriting but right footed and right handed at golf etc. So I don't have an issue with this in the film. But if you want to be really annoyed how about the guitar on the poster is not the same as the one in film (check the different bridge pups). And how about Will Farrell - righthanded guitar playing in Stranger Than Fiction but lefthanded banjo playing in Land of the Lost! Go figure!
