Confused girl buys her way to health and happiness...

...would be the correct title for this film. Plot summary: A girl gets cancer, quits doing the things she never wanted to do then spends all the money she doesn`t have on things she doesn`t need including a guitar which she canĀ“t play, has sex with two people she doesn`t know. She ends up having nothing at all, not even cancer, and plays in a rock band because her crappy guitar playing in the park instantly attracted five other guitar players.
How silly can a movie for grown ups get?

The poetry being: if you believe you're gonna die soon, go ahead and steal whatever you want?

Why not just break into stores and steal stuff then? Of course, that would be called looting and we would frown on it. But theft is theft and that is exactly what she did in this movie.

I'm not going to say this movie is really inspiring or thought-provoking or some non-sense, but on the subject of stealing...she didn't steal anything. Anyone who thinks that is just being ignorant.

She used credit cards, which are perfectly legal, and will in some way face the consequences. Be it paying those credit cards off, or facing hefty financial debt and terrible credit for a very long time.

Yes, by dying she was hoping to not have to face that debt, but there is a difference between not having to face financial debt, and literally stealing.

The original poster has a point, but I still liked the movie a lot of only for that one great line, "Melody, you don't have cancer!". I couldn't stop laughing after that. I expected her to start shouting F words as soon as she left that place.

Yeah. I found the "curing cancer through acting irresponsibly" message to be a bit strange myself.

Umm..is it just me or everyone on this thread keeps repeating what society expect of you and what you should be doing? The big question is why do we live the way we live? We save for our future, sacrifice our original dream careers for job security. Why not just let it all go and take a major risk/change in life direction? Oh yeah, BTW, the comment about stealing and looting is basic conservative view of everything. Maybe, it is because of people like all of you here that I can enjoy taking risks and succeeding instead of just surviving like you, I rather thrive. Even if I fail, HAS ANYONE HEARD OF DECLARING BANKRUPTCY???

P.S. materialistic goods can be replaced, but time can not be replaced.

I think what this thread is getting to is that her spending spree, etc. takes away from the central idea of the movie, that a woman with terminal cancer pursues her dream. Also, when a film skews towards rawer emotions and a more independent film viewpoint, those "it's just a movie" moments seem more out of place.

To my mind, she could have just cashed in her 401(k) and gone through the money or something. And, when she spends lots of money on expensive stuff for no real reason, you end up thinking about that instead of her learning the guitar and trying to do something she always wanted to do.

There are lots of great things in this movie, and I think Amy Redford did well. But, the script has elements that undermine what could have been a better film.

It's amazing how two people can see the same movie, and come away with such totally different interpitations of what they saw. What would you do in the same predicament? Maybe not splurge on all the stuff she bought? Maybe not have a totally guilt-free sexual escapade? What have you always wanted to do but haven't been able to because "life" got in the way? Yer a hypocrite, and yer lying to yourself.
