It's a guys movie, isn't it?

I'll admit it had some very funny moments, but I'm thinking that this is really geared for guys. Just finished watching it for the first time and all I could imagine is a group of guys laughing their butts off at stuff that I found only mildly funny. I do have a new-found appreciation for Robert Downey, Jr. Even though I always liked him in just about everything, he was FANTASTIC in this!

Yes it def is. Its mainly geared towards people who watch and love war films, because its a satire of that genre and hollywood, and thats usually guys. Its also pretty much a buddy flick as well. I just saw this last week and I cant stop watching RDJ in this! I have NEVER laughed so hard as I have at him in this. He was beyond brilliant. Words cant quantify how he nailed that part. Plus thats a part that I am pretty sure 99% of other actors could not pull off.

I totally agree with you! RDJ is underrated by the Hollywood powers-that-be. He is more than just a comic book hero or comedic type. I wish he would have won the Academy Award; he soo deserved it!

reply

It's not so much that he's underrated. Everyone knows he's an amazingly talented actor. The problem up until recently was that no studio wanted to take a risk on him because of his recurring drug habit.

I see it as a film for feminists of both genders because of its satirical look at patriarchal capitalism in Hollywood film and in the studio. It depicts Hollywood's overlapping ideologies of individualism, competition and social Darwinism as a form of male conceit & deceit although, of course, no one is obligated to enjoy it on that level.

You acadamic feminists are batsh*t insane. Next you're gonna say Laurel and Hardy reveal patriarchal conceit and deceit, not to mention the social Darwinism in Home Alone. No one is obligated to listen to your smug superiority complex and suck the fun out of watching a movie.

reply

I couldn't subvert reality enough and sink so low to understand it on your level

There used to be a thread on here about how many women loved this movie.

More like a retards movie.

You have no sense of humor at all. It's clear from your sad posting history. I can understand you anger though, it must suck not to be able to understand a joke. While others laugh and have fun, you just don't get it.
The fact that you can say Monthy Python and the Holy Grail was bad says it all.
You are the retard, not the people that like Tropic Thunder.

I'm a girl and I love this movie. Robert Downey Jr. is great, but I also like Tom Cruise and Matthew McConaughey's performances.

I've shown this movie to 2 guys- one liked it (and he is very hard to please about movies) and one didn't care for it (but we really don't share similar tastes in comedies).

This film has no female co-stars, so it HAS to be a guy's movie. I can imagine how all-male casts can alienate female audiences.
See also The Thing, Platoon, Reservoir Dogs, Saving Private Ryan, or Minority Report. I love all those films, but I'm a guy.

I don't need women in a film to enjoy it. Just the opposite, in fact. I love buddy movies and parodies. I'm not usually a Ben Stiller fan, but I thought he was good in this.

reply

Minority Report? There are female characters in that movie. One of the main characters is female, in fact.

And movies that take place in the field in Vietnam wouldn't have had many women in them. At least not many roles for a strong woman. Prostitutes and peasants at best.

Granted, I don't watch a lot of war movies, but the strongest female (in the field) Vietnam era character I can think of off the top of my head is the sniper from Full Metal Jacket.

I'm a female and I loved this movie. I hate to bring up sexism, but I will. Think of it as Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, Katherine Heigel, Kate Hudson, and Goldie Hawn in the movie roles. Think any guys would go see it? I love Ben Stiller so I will pretty much see anything he is in (anyone who makes a cameo in Arrested Development is good in my book) but the movie has to have universal appeal. If it is a female-led movie, it will lose its appeal to men especially.

reply

Female only films tend to talk about, to and treat men like sexist, moronic, overgrown children that ate inferior to the quite clearly (sarcasm) "strong women" hence men don't like them bit women love them.

The same with a lone female character in a mostly male film.
Generally they are the worst character because of how they ate written to suit the "strong female" archetype and apease feminist and women for some unknown reason.

A film with mostly men are based around a story that doesn't vilify women or mention them that often thus more universal appeal whereas films work mostly women are based on relationships and female interpretations of relationships so the men are the bad guy.
Abusive ex or deadbeat dad or simply all men are pigs and the women are never in the wrong.

Alienating half the population based on gender and not the story.

Definitely. I'm a chick but I get it. Its the fight club of comedy/parody. Every man should see Fight Club and Tropic Thunder.
