I'm convinced that after all these years...this film is STILL too "smart" for people...from the movie trailers, to the Downey character, to the the whole make fun of Hollywood at every angle.

They just can't get it or understand it.

I still crack up at "at a time when being different was to be condemned, and being condemned was to die." The whole Kirk Lazarus/Tobey Maguire trailer was brilliant.

Satan's Alley would have been an Oscar contender if released last year

Yes, that is obvious - but many people miss some of the layers beneath the obvious.

It has a 7.0 rating which is pretty good for a comedy. Most people "get it".

If you know anyone this movie is too smart for, I suggest you stop hanging around with them immediately.
