Inconsistencies and other Q's

I really liked this movie, and I did not see it as so much of a horror film, but more of a thriller. But whatever, I go astray of my discussion. Anyone who has seen this film, riddle me this...

1) If the black pit is where all the bad people went/were taken, then why did Dirk's girlfriend (the girl at the beginning of the film) end up there? In addition to that how did the red dress get back to Dirk if she was wearing it when she went into the pit room?

2) Since the pit is some type of reincarnation portal, are we suppose to assume that it is some type of hell? And the beast thing at the end was the devil or some demon?

3) Why was Marie reincarnated if she was supposed to be the sacrifice? Just the same obviously as Bobby had been many times during the 1900's.

4) What did the baby in the park and the breast feeding of it and the man represent? That's the only thing I could not draw a logical conclusion of.

SPOILERS

1. Dirk's girlfriend was studying the Samhain ritual. She discovers it is linked to a certain cellar in the building where she, and later Bobby and Marie, lives. This is explained at the beginning of the film.

She didn't wear the dress Marie picks from her wardrobe when she disappeared, it was the dress she wore when Dirk first meets her.

1) I'm pretty sure BrideOfTheAtom is right about that.

2) You could see the pit as some sort of urban legend that turns out to be real. The beast thing, isn't that Bobby dressed up? I don't think it's a mythological figure like the devil or a demon.

3) Yes, she was sacrificed but at the same time she was given a new life. When Bobby captured Marie and he ties her up he tells her: 'You said yourself you wanted to start from zero. Well, i'm gonna make that happen.'

4) What did it represent? Good question! I think it's up to you and your imagination to figure that one out. If only we could ask the filmmakers! Pieter Van Hees and Dimitri Karakatsanis aren't on these boards by any chance? I think it's a way of showing what's going on in Marie's head. Strange things are happening to her body in the time she resides in Linkeroever and it affect's her mind too. But feel free to think of it what you will!

To have a better understand about the simbolism of the pit, watch a movie called "The Matrix". And for a better visual concept, try one called "Being John Malkovitch".

Really? I thought it was a horror thriller hybrid. It has strong parallels with other universally regarded horror films like Rosemary's Baby and The Wicker Man.
