Anyone know?

Why wasn't this series a success in the US? I thought it was great - it reminded me very much of "Time Bandits".

I don't know about how successful the 2nd and 3rd films are or will be but the first film didn't fare to well because the American distributor(s) Weinstein (I don't know if I spelled that right or how many people were involved) edited out roughly 9 minutes of vital material to the story trying too hard to make it an American film. I don't know if you are aware of this but the author Luc Besson is french and I have heard to prevent the same thing from happening to the sequels he released them direct to DVD.

Yes, Luc Besson absolutely hated the cuts made by the Weinsteins. I have no doubt that if the Weinsteins just left the film alone, the first film would have been at least as successful in America as it was over in Europe. The Weinsteins killed the franchise's chances over here in the US.

the weinsteins killed the american release of the first film not only did they americanize the title of the film they removed roughly 10 mins of film due to content to make it available to a much younger audiance.. they wanted a cute childrens film insted of a french 10+ year olds film

they killed 2 major fights between balthizars forces and the minimoys, dialog between balthizar and arthur, a kissing scene between arthur and selena and its after effect and an adult scene towards the beginning where arthur needs to find a string to save him and selena. so he takes the string from the shirt top thats holding selena's shirt together and we see her cleavage for .3 seconds so in order to make this happen they removed this scene and its aftermath scene which comprises at least 3-5 mins of film

As if a little cleavage will hurt the delicate sensibilities of a child. LOL They see much worse on daytime TV. It's not as if the uncut version of the film actually showed Princess Selenia's actual breasts. That scene wasn't really what you called an adult scene, you know. The version not touched by the Weinsteins was very tame as it was. Anyway, I'm glad someone agrees that it was the Weinsteins who killed the first film.
