Just finished watching. (*Spoilers*)

I'm glad they went back to an adventure-type style similar to the first film, though it was short. The ending was quite disappointing; I felt it wrapped up rather quickly: Arthur succeeds in ending Maltazard's reign, his family and friends eat dinner, and then it...basically ends. It's quite the same tease I felt with the first movie's ending, wanting to see how Arthur and Selenia's relationship flourishes but only leaving with the promise to see each other "in 10 moons."

Which, in itself, is kind of a plot hole. Wasn't the telescope destroyed in the second movie? Though, I suppose Arthur could go through the rope winding again. Kind of risky, though.

Anyone have their own thoughts on the movie?

reply

It should take less than ten moons to fix a telescope. Besides, he could use grandpa's potions.

I agree that it would be a simple matter for Arthur to visit the minimoys as stated he could use the potions and to me it seems simpler to buy a similiar telescope and use it, than repairing the other telescope. It may be a bit of a disappointing ending but look at this way his parents now know about the minimoys and will likely be understanding about letting him be at his grandparents every ten moons. I have a few questions why did they let Arthur and Selenia kiss in the second and third movies but not in the American version of the first movie? The only reason I think of is this is not such a huge age difference between the actors. The other question also has to do with the kissing in the second book Selenia and Arthur are married, by her kissing him when they want to kiss again Beta tells them that newlwed minimoys are not supposed to kiss for another 1000 minimoy years (ten human years) regardless she kisses him before he goes home. Also midway through both sequels they kiss with atleast one minimoy witnessing each kiss does anyone else think they compromise with Selenia and Arthur because they can only see each other every ten moons?

reply

They didn't kiss in the American version of the first film because of the Weinstein brothers. They made several unnecessary cuts to the film, you know. Not the least of which being the kissing. However, EVERY international version of the first film did include those scenes. The Weinstein brothers felt that the kissing wasn't a good fit for the American audience. Because the international version of the film wasn't distributed by the Weinstein brothers and because they are getting around the Weinstein brothers' American distribution of the last two films by bringing them straight to DVD and Blu-Ray, the Weinstein brothers won't be making those same cuts to the film. I thought this fact was kind of obvious. Luc Besson did hate the cuts the Weinstein brothers made to the first film, after all, and wanted to try to keep that from happening this time around. If it went to theaters here, the Weinsteins would have likely been the distributors again for contractual reasons, and those same scenes would have probably been cut out by the Weinsteins again. The Weinsteins are who killed the film's chances in the US, after all. They basically took Besson's work and shredded it of a lot of it's depth because of their totally unnecessary cuts. Again, I thought this was obvious.

I know they didn't kiss in the American (except in the deleted scenes on youtube) version because of Weinstein's editing out vital material. In the second book Beta says that newlywed Minimoys are supposed to wait another 1000 Minimoy years between the first and second kiss I am still unclear if for the characters of Arthur and Selenia, the Minimoys make exceptions for them possibly because Selenia is now the queen or that she can only see Arthur every ten moons. Also in this franchise they have kissed four times (I know not in the American version) twice in the second book and I can't find the third or fourth books but presumably once in each of them. I am not meaning to be defensive but I do wonder if a reason is given why none of the Minimoys seem to mind them kissing three times since the first one considering it is against their traditions (seeing as it has clearly been not been a thousand of their years) and the second and third kiss seem to be in front of many minimoys while only Beta see the first and fourth kiss.

I don't know about the books because I haven't actually read them. The deleted scenes that were on YouTube were actually from the international version of the first film. The American release of the film actually didn't have any deleted scenes. The scenes were just cut with absolutely no reference to them whatsoever, not even in a deleted scene feature on the DVD release. It's as if the Weinsteins wanted to keep any reference to those scenes as far away from the film as they can, which explains just how much the Weinsteins hated those particular scenes. That's one reason the 2nd and 3rd films are coming straight to DVD in the US this time around, to avoid any of those vital cuts made by the Weinsteins in the first film.

The deleted scenes sound like the American voices but that may have been added to them. Anyway the scenes I saw were in English and Arthur sounded like Freddie Highmore to me but like I said somebody may have added them somehow or I might be completely wrong.

reply

Well, the international version of the film also includes the uncut English version of the film. That is the version those scenes came from. However, the uncut English version of the film is not the version released in America. The scenes were done for the English release.

I always believed that Arthur would visit Selenia as often as possible and that at some point (likely when he is in late teens) when he visits he will stay longer than a few days and possibly stay down there for most of his life and come up to see his family once in a while.

reply

I could definitely see it. He definitely loved her, after all, and with his grandfather's potions, he could come and go as he pleased and not have to wait every 10 moons for the passageway to actually open.

i knoticed the editing in arthur and the invisibles american version right off..
it's as if "arthur et les minimoys" and "arthur and the invisibles" were 2 seperate films

i love arthur et les minimoy's and absolutely hate arthur and the invisibles its like they are for 2 seperate age groups... first being for older audiances above 10 the other for those below 8

the kissing at the end was removed, the battle scenes and were WAY less intense, various dialogue between arthur and balthizar removed and selena haveing her string pulled from her shirt int he begging of the movie as they are being pulled down the "river". which caused her shirt to fly open.(you see 0.5 seconds of cleavage and ends before anything else is revealed) and then cuts to her screaming at arthur as she quickly crossed her arms across her chest and then cut to the next shot of her talking about how he could of asked her for her string... were removed from the american version my guess was cause of content and the sexual themes..

i'm slightly afraid to watch the 2 new movie collection on DVD in fear amercan distribution did the same hack and slash job to the american dvd release.

i'm a huge luc besson fan le femme niketa and the professional are 2 of my favorite films

reply

Well, considering that the 2 movie collection went straight to DVD in the US in order to avoid more cuts by the Weinsteins, you won't get the same hack and slash job. However, if the last 2 films did manage to come to theaters here, which they didn't, you likely would have gotten that hack and slash jobs from the Weinsteins because of contractual obligations. Besson hated what the Weinsteins did to the first film so he did what he could to skirt around the Weinstein distribution, which required a straight to DVD release. So, in some ways, a straight to DVD release was a good thing.
