I just didnt understand the ending...can someone clarify for me?
I dont get why her husband went on his own...is thier relationship over or did he just want to go home and she stayed for the children.
And was it totally over with her lover...cos that ended rather abruptly.

Returning home was Chanu's dream (remember when he said that "all these years I dreamed of going home a Big man?") & yet whilst he undeniably wants the very best for his family to me he just comes across as hopelessly naive & impractical.
He returns home to Bangladesh (& still keeps in touch by writing weekly & telephoning monthly) to "clear the path" for his wife & daughters to subsequently follow him but really I think in his heart of hearts he knows that will never happen-I mean as far as his daughters are concerned they have only ever known Western Civilization & elder daughter Shahana has made it perfectly clear from the outset that she does not want to go.
As for Nazneen well all these years later living in the UK she has tasted emancipation for the first time & has developed into a strong character (by standing up to elderly Mrs Islam for example)-At the end of the book she has even developed a good sense of business acumen & works for Razia thereby becoming financially independent for the first time in her life so that husband Chanu does not even need to send money anymore.
Nazneen also expresses interest (in the book anyway) of attending a new political group & it is even alluded to that she may even like to be the Questioner in that group such is her new found confidence grown.
As for her affair with Karim it was her who told him that she could not divorce her husband nor marry Karim so the affair therefore ended on her terms & in the book it is referred to & assumed that after the riots he has also returned to Bangladesh.
