One of the worst movies of the decade

I just watched Afterwards, and I couldn't make it past the first 30 minutes. Its a completely dreadful movie with a very unlikable lead character and one of the most depressing storylines I've ever seen in a movie.

reply

I love it when people say it was the worst film they've seen when in fact they haven't actually watched it.

reply

Believe me, the first 30 minutes were the worst I've ever sat through with any movie.

reply

I watched the whole movie and it was really bad. Very boring.

reply

the first 10 mn was very good and then i got bored so much so i stop to watch this movie it doesn t understand me

reply

it was indeed boring, mock profundity as the other reviewer called it is dead on.

not good when you are just so bored you are just desperately waiting for the cast to be killed off....

just %@# die already!

lol

reply

I liked it. You're not supposed to like Nathan. Perhaps if you had watched the film up to it's conclusion you'd understand why he's not likable.

reply

I thought this film was really good- it's amazing how people will spend 10 dollars to see nonsense like Iron Man 2 instead of thought-provoking films like this - if you have the attention span of an 8 year old ADD child, then i can understand why you wouldn't like this film- for anyone with half a brain, however, this was a solid movie

reply

Agreed, my brain is intact and unpolluted. I really liked this film.

I skim read the review and thought he was talking about Malkovich as the "whisperer", I thought , yes Malky does whisper a lot, but that's his style LOL. Didn't really get what the guys problem was. Then noticed he was taling about Duris as a whisperer, read the review again from the top and I have to say I had no problem at all understanding Duris and didn't notice much whispering from him LOL.

That reviewer has a serious problem if all he can understand is Queen's English

7/10

Me 3. I also enjoyed this film. It did start out kind of slow, but once it got into its groove it was a great ride.

reply

I agree with the thread starter. This movie is truly horrible. This is Silk levels of being BOTH boring and pretentious.

reply

Worst movie of the decade? Mmmmm, don't think so. Was it the best movie I've seen in awhile? No. It did hold my interest though.

It was slow-paced but that's not a reason to trash the movie. Americans want instant gratification 24/7. Too bad real life doesn't work that way. Afterwards is a pretty good thought provoking film, somewhat sobering, but artfully done.

If you want explosions you need to learn to pick your movies more carefully.

Someone started a thread about the cover-art and marketing of this movie. The reason everyone thinks it's bad is because it misled people from the start. The people who saw a gun on the cover and read "Chilling.... It'll make your nerves stand on end.... etc" were expecting just that. However, it's almost a perfect example of how precise American marketing is.

If you check out the French cover, you'll see it gives the vibe of more of a love story. So perhaps the producers/distributors made the decision to market the movie differently based on what audience in what country they thought they could sell the most tickets/DVD's to. It could be something a simple as, "Thrillers were real big in the U.S in 2008".

So is it really that the movie was terrible? No. It would be the same if a movie was marketed to be "Deep... Thought provoking... Will turn your world upsidedown." and then you watch it and it's Iron Man 2 (like someone mentioned earlier). I bet a lot of people would be pissed that it was so shallow. They may be right, but Iron Man 2 was also action packed and easy fun. So to people looking for the latter mentioned, it was a great movie. The same can be said about Afterwards.

"one of the worst..", each time this kind of thread pops up, I tend to ignore. If it was that bad, why bother to post this thread? To warn others not to see it?

It maybe be your worst, but may be others' best or good one to watch. So next time, you find it hard to chew, just spit it out on the ground, not on others. Thanks for the consideration.

This movie touches a good point of life and death. Romain Duris perhaps is not popular in the U.S. markets, but he is a well-known actor in France, I recently watched his films, "Paris", "L'auberge espagnole"(He spoke both French and Spanish) and this "Afterwards". He is an excellent actor of his age.

"Afterwards", just like "Hereafter" of Eastwood, touches the issue of facing the ultimate fate, and the courage and relationship to deal with it "after" everything.
