Spoiler: Part 2 What was the point

of Charles Dance having sex/developing relationship with the sister who lived in the Youlgreve house who was at least a third of his age?

It wasn't referred to again and he could have got the heroin knowledge from other circumstances. It seemed really gratuitous sex to me that was unrelated to the plot and added little.

I really didn't get it. Plus he was a vicar (and basically portrayed as a decent bloke if a bit bullying on occassion and oblivious to his serial killer daugher) and shagging a member of your congregation of that age who has come to you for help seems massively out of character.

I just don't get it.

Thinking about it, I don't really know why that storyline was included either. I was expecting Rosie to come along and catch them and then go crazy or something, but like you said it wasn't referred to again. I'm guessing it was there to give another side to Charles Dance's character and shows that his marraige wasn't very stable, but I don't really understand how it contributed to understanding Rosie's persona.

Aim - I agree. It had no impact on Rosie at all as she wasn't aware of it and her knowledge of it wasn't even hinted at. I suppose possibly it could be making the point that even if she killed Vanessa, her father still wouldn't be "all hers" alone as he had other sexual/love interests.

The only thing I can think is that maybe they filmed more of that part of the story but that it hit the cutting room floor.

It just seemed really odd - totally isolated from the rest of the story - apart from the one scene where he nearly kissed her.

I've not read the books it's based on so there could be more info there.

The point would seem to be that such dramas are obliged to have a sex scene, but I agree, it added nothing to the story. I thought the age difference somewhat unpalatable, Charles Dance is 60, I couldn't find out the girl's age, but wasn't she supposed to be a teenager?

reply

It's to add to David's overall guilt over the past. He says it is all his fault - his lust that caused everything. He ignored his daughter for his work, wife and lust. However Wendy says it wasn't his fault.

reply

Yes but the lust with the daughter added nothing and caused nothing - no one knew about it. I still think there must have been some scenes cut out.

The purpose of the scene was to reiterate that David Byfield had far more time for fulfilling her perverted sexual desires than sort out his psychotic daughter. All of Rosie's problems stemmed from an inattentive Father. As a young girl she was ignored by her father until the death/murder of her grandfather. Thereby she made the link between killing people and getting her fathers attention. Try reading the books; they explain an awful lot me than the series did!

Is the sex scene in the book? It did look like it was put in there for gratuitous reasons mainly, although I take the point about it showing how troubled Charles Dance's character was.
