Why was Webber obsessed with Lewis? (*spoilers*)

I don't get it. I couldn't understand why he saved him the first time, then he did it again, and now I read that he chose Lewis as one of Lee Mead's understudies? Seriously? I mean, he looked the part and had a lovely voice, but no matter what song he was singing or what emotion he was supposed to be showing, his face looked EXACTLY the same - flat. I know he was only 17 at the time of ADWD, so I think once he lived a bit he'd be better, but not at that point.

"You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment."

I agree with you ethereal.

Spoiler below:

I have a nasty feeling that LLoyd Webber was pushing the dreadful Lewis to win "Any Dream Will Do" and am just relieved that Lee Mead was never in any of the sing-offs... regardless of his obvious talent, I think he would have been sent home so that Lewis could be pushed forward.

Lewis's voice was okay and I suppose he has the kind of looks that appeal to Beckham fans but all I saw was someone who was constantly whining and weeping. Plus I hated the way his mother and "Nanna" (can't he pronounce Grandma?) kept getting their faces in front of the camera at any opportunity.

I can't begin to tell you the comments on the Lee fansites when Lewis replaced Lee while he was on holiday; all I'll say is that the phrase "WTF?" was used a lot!
