japan: from pink (soft porn) movies to masterpieces

ive read a lot and seen a lot of japanese movies from many decades. early on, there were many great masterpieces from great directors like akira kurosawa and others. then at the end of the 60s, funding started going down and so japan saw a drought of great movies from about 1970 to 1998. between those time there were mostly sexploitation films. even akira kurosawa had to get funding for his epics, kagemusha and ran, from george lucas and roman polanski.

then we have kiyoshi kurosawa. started off in the times when you could only get funding in japan for pink or sexploitation films. then in the late eighties he was allowed to make a horror film called "guard from the underground" which is an early film for him but same style as the later films. he made "cure" in 1997 which was a great movie and also a horror.

in 1998, the modern classic horror film called "ringu" came out and there was a boom of horror films comming out of japan and other asian countries after that. so the former big demand from japan was pink or sexploitation films was now replaced by horror films.

now in the late 2000s, asian horror has kind of settled down and all those directors who were making horror films are looking into making other genre films now that they are established. kiyoshi kurosawa said that directors over fifty normally stick to the genre they are good at and he is an exception. the answer to this was obvious to me. its because he didnt have an opportunity to make those films when he was younger.

thats all i wanted to say. ^_^

You seem to know your stuff! I've heard of Kurosawa, but I'm not sure if it was related to video games, or anime/manga, but could you suggest some titles of his 'classic' old movies so that I can perhaps see what is so great about his movie making?

Regarding Tokyo Sonata, a great film. Also see Departures, The Most Distant Course, Shinjuku Incident, Black Rain.

which kurosawa are you talking about? I'm gonna assume you mean akira kurosawa.

my favorite film by him is called "Ikiru". his most famous is probably "the seven samurai" or the several times remade "yojimbo" which i haven't seen either of. i also like "rashomon", "high and low", and "the hidden fortress". "the hidden fortress inspired star wars even tho george lucas kinda denies much of it did. lol
