Why the heck does the shot go so out-of-focus when Leonard dies?!

When Beast-Leonard burns up, the shot goes completely out of focus.

What's the deal? It's so sloppy and distracting!

Did they only shoot one take of the background plate and it went out of focus and they were too lazy to reshoot it so they just blurred the effect to match it?

Was it a last-minute addition, so the blurring was to cover up last-minute work?

Did the effect just turn out poorly, so they blurred it?

It's just another one of the mind-bendingly stupid moments in this film...
