This movie reminds me of Soul Food

This movie reminds me of Soul Food, it seems to be a millenium version of it because think about it.

a. There's three sisters and the oldest hate each other,
b. Theres the youngest son whos really talented and wants to see the family stay together (i.e. Ahmad from S.F. and Baby from T.C.)
c. There's one family member who always comes as a surprise, which means come after several years and when they do come they come with trouble (i.e. Quention from T.C. and Faith from S.F.).
d. Theres a cheating husband (Miles from S.F. and Malcomn from T.C.)
e. They always eating every chance you see them LOL.
f. Theres that one person who always comes to eat, I forgot their name but that cousin in T.C. that left after dinner was over, he was wearing orange, and then in S.F. that older guy that would flirt with the young women and do prayer at Sunday Dinner.
g. Mekhi Phifer, enough said lol.

I think thats all the similarities, but this movie reminded me so much of Soul Food anyone else agree?

Now for some differences:

No one died in TC.

You actually see Faith and Miles screwing in SF. (And so did Teri, unfortunately for Miles.)

Instead of chasing Malcolm with a knife and trying to cut his nuts off like she should have, Malcolm was a bad boy...so his wife gave him a well-deserved spanking with a belt while he was naked and wet, sliding all over the baby oil covered bathroom floor. Teri in SF chased her husband with a huge knife and yelled out "Faith effed my husband!"

Ma'Dere gave her children money in TC while Ahmad had to find out that his grandma really did stash her money in Uncle Pete's TV...and the uncle apparently knew.

No one was a lawyer in TC, but Joe apparently had connections in the Marines who could allow Claude to be with his family for Christmas. (I wonder if maybe he got discharged?)

There are a lot of similarities. Baby reminded me a lot of Ahmad and he was the peace keeper in the family.

I dunno bout that...when his sisters and brother were arguing about what to do with the dry cleaning business, he told them, "Do what y'all want."

Mekhi Phifer co-wrote the movie and I agree that is similar to Soul Food. Its like Soul Food at Christmas or a Soulful christmas. But it is still a good movie!

reply

Same here! Too much like "Soul Food" but, it was an okay movie(*****).

Damn!! My posts attract so many nutty B-A-S-T-A-R-D-S!

it was a good movie but it was too much like a soul food knock-off. like somebody else said, it was like the Christmas soulfood.

reply

I don't think it was like "Soul Food." "Soul Food" didn't really have any comedic parts. "This Christmas" did.

Let's combine the movies and call it Christmas Soul Food. This movie is the reason I can't stand a lot of black films. Boring, predictable, typical. After the first fifteen minutes, you know how it will end.

Chris Brown, cute boy. Leave the classics alone. You can't reach Donny Hathaway's level on your best day. You never will.

P.S. Before you start, I am black.

I said the same thing at the theater. It reminded me of Soul Food. That's not a bad thing. Soul Food was a very good movie.

That's what I thought, too.

I just saw it for the first time about two weeks ago on cable. It was better than I expected; I enjoyed it. In my opinion, the acting was good because their reactions to different situations seemed genuine.

The movie as a whole did not remind me of Soul Food. Having a peacekeeper, a cheater, a bad cook, etc. in the family just seemed like any average family to me so I did not relate that to Soul Food. But the relationship between Kelli and Lisa and even the characters themselves definitely reminded me of Teri and Maxine. Like the mom on Soul food said, they are like oil and water.

Also, in most of the families I know, the direction/achievement of the children is similar. Kelli and Teri taking the higher education/no kids/career route versus Lisa and Maxine taking the high school diploma/baby-making/homemaker route stood out most to me. To me, such direct contrasts are not normal. I would have expected Lisa and Maxine to be more like Bernadine in Waiting to Exhale - degree but put career on hold to be a stay at home moms.

One thing I couldn't shake was feeling like it was The Jefferson's with the dry cleaning business. LOL. Oh, and Chris Brown has some nice pipes for real.

As for Maxine on "Soul Food," I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that she never got a college education. Especially the Maxine that was in the series that airs on BET. She seems pretty intelligent to me for someone who isn't an attorney like her big sister.

LOL after reading your post i do agree with you in fact i re watched the movie and composed a little list

Senior played piano-Miles played piano
bar brawl
someone ends up in jail and is released because of a favor
awkward table scene
bathroom scene with lem and bird similar to mel's pantry scene
heated discussion in kitchen about mothers assets
oldest sis wanted to sell house in soul food...cleaners in this xmas
family vote is taken when arguments arise
mel has to defend her man constantly just like bird

frommetopooh, I have this movie on DVD and I've watched it many times. I sure don't remember Mel constantly defending her boyfriend Devean. In fact, he defended his own opinions to her family in quite an impressive manner. To quote Ma'Dere, "Mel, your boyfriend has a good head on his shoulders. I only hope that some of that rubs off on my little professional student."
