So why was his family attacked in the first place?

So many questions
1) What was the motivation for such a brutal attack on Ron Eldard's family>
2) The cops seem to think Til was cum. But if he was just a hitman, why would they equate him on the same level as the guy who brulalized Eldard's family.

The Dr,the cop and some other cops were running an operation. I believed they picked his family out cause they seemed happy,rich and able to pay the money needed to "find the killer"
