Looking Forward To It

I saw this on History Channel. It seemed like an indictment of the USA and the former Soviet Union. Instead of detailing the accounts of both countries as they engaged in the so-called space race, it seemed to dismiss the whole effort as simply a result of mutual paranoia. An intriguing notion, but it ultimately (for me) resulted in a documentary that makes a fascinating subject really seem like boring old rubbish. I was expecting to see detailed the efforts of school children back then to track the Sputnik spacecraft as it revolved around the Earth. No real science subjects were covered, but a lot passion was shown on the part of the heroic space dog of Sputnik 2, Laika. Instead, much of this doco concerned itself with civil defence footage and the various ravings of lunatic politicians and members of the general public. This film is a mildly interesting curiosity at best and a protest of the international space programme at worst.

Sometimes when people have preconceived notions about what a documentary "should" be about, they become disappointed and critical when the film turns out to be what the director actually wanted to portray. This seems like a close-minded way to watch any film. I thought this film was very well done and did a great job of showing what kind of "mania" surrounded the launch of Sputnik during that time. If you don't think Cold War Era paranoia and "lunatic politicians" played a significant role in fueling the space race, you need to review your history.
