Terrible Game

I just can't get over how awful the gameplay is. Terrible graphics and yet it chews on my X1900. The voiceacting is terrible and doesn't sync-in whatsoever with the animation. No autosave feature which is ridiculous. Loading times take forever. Interface itself is incredibly dated. The list in endless. What a waste of money.

reply

I admit I was expecting a lot more given the hype but if you can just get past the break-in period, it DOES GET MUCH BETTER.

Once the Zone opens up and your Stalker is more famous, the game really comes alive, especially with all the eerie horror sections and the combat.

Give it a chance.

I think this is fantastic game.
Sure the graphics are bad and the loading times are long.

But can you image playing a game this complex with the graphics of fear? Impossible with the hardware available.
And you say the game east up your x1900.
I dont think it will. I have an x850 XT and it works fine.
It works fine because I have a good CPU and good memory.

This game does not comply to the imaginery pissing match that games makers are having today.

The AI in this game is amazing. The game is open ended, but the world keeps living even if you are not there.

How many other games can you whip out binoculars, and see a mutated boar chasing a pack of dogs across a field. Or see a pack of dogs huddled under a bridge because it is raining outside? All unscripted.

And the day night cycle and underground/indoor parts make for some of the most scary scenes I have ever played.

Wait till a bloodsucker sneaks up behind you in the dark and see if you need new trousers too.

reply

I really tried to like it last night, but I just can't. The game has so much potential but it lacks in just about everything.

fyi i'm using a core2 duo e6600 and 2gig of ocz ram and the game isn't running that smooth (highest possible settings. Turning the quality down a bit smoothens it out somewhat.

Think I'll wait for the weekend and get C&C3.

reply

this kinda makes it a bit crap for you but becuase your system is so good it doesnt work well im running a 7300gt and a P 4 3.00ghz 512 ram and this game works great.
the problem is that it was meant to come out in 2003 when my stuff was top of the range, but dosnt run that great on yours becuase it is now top of the range.

I'm just the coolset dumb dude you'll ever meet *put on matrix sunnies*

ther are some things in this game that just annoy the crap outa me like when i walk into a place outside and it starts loading when its finished i see a little green raidiation signal thing on the side of the screen and im like wtf!

reply

You guys must be playing on some very old machines, because the game runs fine for me... I have to live with some of the graphics turned down, but I think it's a great game. Graphics do not make a game.

Turn off dynamic lighting, you will see a tremendous improvement.

I got a Core2Duo E6300 @ 3ghz, GeForce 7950GT, 2gb of RAM, and this game will run at 1680x1050 with max details just fine. :)

I had to reinstall my videocard drivers for some reason, and it fixed my performance issues.

reply

When I first installed the game I was pretty much "meh" at the game. I played it a bit, then I messed up and died, and I didn't bother to reload the game. Then the next day I started it up again (with a new game) and I'm finding it pretty fun.

I've had no performance issues (it freezes for a second or two every hour or so but nothing major). The load times are a bit long but understandable.

I'm on 2.6ghz, 1gb ram and a radeon X800SE. So not exactly a top of the line comp. Not too shabby though either, I guess.

reply

lmao, you like this game a little too much me thinks.

1) Radeon is spelt Radeon you yokelling retard.
2) Loading doesn't take forever... it just appears every 5 seconds. Really annoys the *beep* out of me.
3) Lol, you spelt Radeon wrong! Oh and please wait a month for the new line of ATI cards to come out and piss all over your 8800.

reply

1) Well done
2) Agreed
3) Nah they didnt

HEYYY THIS GAME SUCKS LOL

This game was such a pain in the ass to run. It just doesn't work on ATI chipsets. I couldn't play for more than 5 min without crashing back to the desktop. The only way I could get the game to run was to use the regedit tweak and vid_restart command.
X1950XTX, Hyperthreaded P4 3.2 ghz, 1 gig DDR2 RAM.

The HD2900 was such a huge disapointment. I was going to get one until I saw its craptastic benchmarks. It runs ok until you start using AA then its frame rates just die. Supposedly its steam processor architecture is flawed.

STALKER is amazing. I enjoyed it a lot, despite some of the shortcomings you mentioned. It's very different from run-of-the-mill American shooters, pretty unique in fact.

Walking through that contaminated, abandoned city near the reactor that exists in real life... going into the reactor which exists in real life. Man, if you think about that - it's sicker and more thought-provoking than any other shooter I've ever played.

It's too bad that this game has so many technical issues; namely crashing every 5 minutes unless you have a patched version. Luckily, when I got the game version 1.005 was already out and crashing was pretty rare most of the time.

I think the game looks pretty good too, although I haven't played many games lately. I have the settings pretty low on my 2.4Ghz, 1GB ram, 128mb geforce 5900, but the game runs fairly smoothly most of the time with stuttering every once in a while.

Regardless of the crashing, this is one of my favorite video games of all time. The depth of the game is so far beyond any other first person shooter I've ever played (it makes Deus Ex look so simple). I love how the world is so dynamic; you can go pretty much wherever you want, and just because you cleared an area, new enemies do eventually come back. The maps are all amazing and the storyline is very rich, although it could have been delivered more clearly. The day-night cycles and dynamic weather is also awesome.

I've since modded the game with Redux, which makes it much harder and more realistic, and reminds me of the original Resident Evil for Playstation.

I admit, the beginning is a little boring but once you realize how complicated the game is, I think you'll really start to like it.

I just discovered the game a week or two ago since I finally got a Mac that can play PC games. Glitches aside it is phenomenal... I think most people complaining want Call of Duty or Crysis. Best graphics with the dumbest story (although COD4 is pretty smart)... this for all it's graphic flaws (bad human face mapping, some polygon issues, flat origami foliage) the rough around the edges factor works in favor of creating a dingey world. I happen to like it's retrograde design, with parts of it looking very primitive, and other parts being very high end. The AI is impressive, and the fact you can't headshot everyone from the beginning makes it incredibly challenging (or frustrating to those expecting all games to be pwn fests). I recently modded it with Save's Nuclear Snow and it's creepy as all hell and very Eastern European looking it reminds me of the movie Avalon... and anyone who's seen the movie Stalker, you get the same desolate-lost post-apocalyptic feeling of scraping to survive. It makes finding good weapons really cool.

I can see where you're coming from. I purchased the game the other day for cheap to pass the time between game releases.

I bought the game hoping it would be something like Deus Ex, and it does have some similar elements. I find the combat extremely satisfying. In particular near the beginning where you go to that factory/farm and bandits have taken over it.

The graphics aren't spectacular, but they're good enough. And i also like the voice acting. Little additions like the guys huddled around a fire in the middle of nowhere playing guitar makes me smile every time.

Lack of auto-save seems to be a growing trend in games, it's extremely irritating. I had to re-do about half an hour of "work" at least 5 times over. Now i save all the damn time just in case something unexpected happens, as often does in STALKER.

One thing that truly does irritate me to no end is the awkward map. I just want to zoom out to see the whole map and see where all of my objectives are and the terrain i have to cover.

The game has started to pick up and i've gotten over the initial "What the hell" feeling when i look at how vast the map is and how uninformative the missions are.

It was a bargain at £7.99 and i would have gladly paid full price for it.

reply

It gets better...

But yeah the PDA is pretty shoddy. And get used to "WTF" moments doing missions. Some don't resolve even when you do them right. I think there's one at the beginning you are supposed to stop some mutants at a point, you go there, and nothing. Nothing happens. Great.

The immersive element of the game really is the weather, very realistic gunfights (and lack of aiming), and voice acting is entertaining. Once you get better weapons at higher levels it gets cool.

And be prepared to get utterly pwned on the final level.

I completed it the other day, well i say "completed" due to important stalker deaths i never found Strelok, i'll have to start over. But i reached the Monolith and made my wish :).

I found it pretty easy towards the end, the only part that gave me any trouble was where you reach NPP and get spammed by choppers.

Fantastic game, and there's no doubt more i can discover more on a second play-through. This time i hope to get some missions from Freedom instead of enlisting with that psychopath Skull again.

reply

Uh you never find Strelok... for a reason which I won't spoil.

There are also I think 6 alternate endings for wishes, depending on your characters. My one favorite being, if you have more than 1 million rubles at the end, you dream you are being buried in gold coins (since you are obviously greedy with your stash)... and later cuts away to show the roof collapsed and rained nuts and bolts down on you, burying you.

Yeah the last section is pretty rough with the chopper and the couple roof RPG shooters, and the random plasma sniper dude. If you can get past that one section it's cake after that.

I'll probably go back to replaying it since after finishing Clear Sky I was a bit disappointed and would like to do this again.

Some idiot already gave away the Strelok plot away with an uncensored post. I guessed that, that might have been the plot but not having gotten to that stage you don't know until someone else ruins it.

The ending i got was with the being buried in gold coins, there was just nothing i needed to spend my cash on that i couldnt salvage from someone without spending any cash.

I'm onto clear sky next and then i'll replay SoC.

reply

And after that I'd recommend Fallout 3. Not as spooky as STALKER, but the interfaces, hacking, stealthing, and VATS computer assisted firing are pretty cool. It's more of what I expected of CS... SoC still has what I consider the best pack A.I. behavior of enemies. Creatures in most other games walk in circles... SoC has them roam, sleep... interact and fight each other which just seems more realistic.

That last part i ran through it, and by the time i got inside the power plant my armour was completely damaged and was hardly shielding me from radiation... I somehow managed to fight my way though to the end using those anti rad things and healing every 10 seconds.
