Reason for the Series Ending

I have yet to hear anything definitive on why the series was ended. The obvious
reason would be the RL baby but in the past quarter century I can't remember
a star ever doing that. (doesn't mean it couldn't or didn't happen)

Has anybody seen anything about this ?

TV execs rarely actually say why a show ends other than to offer the standard "it had run its course." Translated that usually means the network wanted to replace it with a cheaper show, lower-paid actors (ie; younger and hungrier), and that they had enough episodes to syndicate from now until the end of time on cable networks and other outlets.

Add in the fact USA long ago fired the two series creators and you have a situation where there was no longer anyone who'd fight for it to stick around. It was run mostly by hired hands, who probably all had ideas of their own for shows they wanted to make after proving their skills by running IPS. It's a tough business and people have to take the opportunities they can get, for the most part.

One of the show's creators, David Maples, has an interview online in which he makes nice over the fact USA took the show away from him. I expect he'd like to work for this network again so his conciliatory attitude makes sense from a career standpoint.

I was not aware of the David Maples situation. Since his wife Holly left
after S2 I am going to guess that's when that happened. As far as syndication
goes they may mot have hit the magic 100 but I suspect you're right and they
have enough. Sounds like Mary McCormack bailed as soon as she could and not
make obvious waves or screw herself financially.

reply

Ratings went down every single season especially after Maples was fired. Giving an answer would require USA admitting they made a mistake, and that's not going to happen.

At least they had a good series finale in which all the loose ends were tied up. I hate it when a show is cancelled and doesn't get a proper ending.

I don't know, I consider five solid seasons a good run for any series and what many shows seem to be aiming for these days.

Agreed, and it's pretty great to have a show that you like last for five years.

This was and still is one of my favorite shows and as it turns out, I can answer that question!

During the 4th season NM started the race for a new Governor…. and they got one. The previous Gov. had made the state very "friendly" for Hollywood to film in, much the way Vancouver BC has. They benefitted enormously from those statutes and one of the best examples was the show In Plain Sight. So when the governorship changed hands, one of the first things that became clear was that the "filming tax perks" were going to go away. Mary McCormack decided she was happy at calling it quits at 5 seasons so they did the last season, a little shorter, and closed out the show.

So in this case it wasn't so much the "studio" as it was the location and the general feeling of cast and crew that they had the chance to end it all well and the time to do it right. So that's how it happened. So even if you never come back and see this, I'm still happy to have been able to answer your question as it's a show I still watch, love and miss terribly.
