What happened to all the threads on this movie?

I know I commented on a thread for this movie about a year ago, but now it's gone. The only threads left are those in the current year. What happened?

reply

Every now and then they delete all the threads for a movie here on IMDb. They say that they do so because of problems with storage space and to refresh the boards. Stupid but true. Storage space for text shouldn't be a problem and refreshing the boards where posts are sorted in chronological order doesn't make any sense, and it works against one of its purposes - to inform new visitors about facts and insights about the movie. We have to invent the wheel again and again. They do movie culture history a big disservice by deleting the posts.

reply

The frequency of deleting threads depends on the popularity of the movie. Famous movies, especially if they are rather new, are not allowed to have any threads that are inactive over 3 months. Therefore people start the same discussions again and again, unaware that most of that has been written already, even dozens of times. Sometimes it is refreshing when some new ideas appear, not influenced by old posts, but still it would be by far more interesting if these new ideas could be compared to old ones that have unfortunatelly been forever swept away, and if the authors of old and new comments got a chance to confront their arguments.

Almost everything I was going to say has already been said about it. And will be said again in a few years I guess. I wonder if it contributes to the trash talk on IMDB. Like people know whatever they say is going to be deleted eventually so they might as well be even more negative. I'm excluding the posts that are against the rules and removed by administrators.

You wouldn't think that text takes up that much space. Perhaps it is how the boards are set up.

One of the best things about the boards is seeing something someone posted years ago and the replies keep coming in; a long time apart.

There are more than 2,000,000 titles on imdb, plus more than a million names (actors, crew, etc.); there's data for each, plus multiple boards for many -- that's a LOT of data. It has to be thinned out periodically. That said, many people think imdb weeds in an illogical way.

Wow, didn't know IMDB did this. That is irksome in the utmost. What the hell!?

The sad truth is imdb lost its importance. It used to be the one and only site for movies, but nowadays people don't care any more. Ebert is dead and so is real movie criticism.
