"Home and Away" and "Neighbors" are horrible.

I agree, both "Home and Away" and "Neighbors" should have had an axe put in their heads by now.

The Chaser's War On Everything.
Although I must warn you, they make some Americans look like idiots.
The Librarians is pretty awesome too.

Out of interest what exactly is Sugar Rush? I've never heard of it. As for Australian comedies check out Frontline, The Games, The Micallef Programme, The adventures of Lano and Woodley, CNNN, The Chaser's War On Everything...

reply

I was gonna ask the same thing...never heard of Sugar Rush? Oooh definately check out anything with Shaun Micallef in it.

If he gets word of this my arse is grass and he's got a lawnmower if you know what I mean?

reply

Just looked up Sugar Rush, it's British...hence why I've never seen it.

And hell yes, Late Show.

If he gets word of this my arse is grass and he's got a lawnmower if you know what I mean?

reply

and The Late Show, how could i forget our greatest ever comedy.

reply

Depends on your sense of humour but I thought "Real Stories" with Hamish and Andy was pretty funny. Though it depends on the episode/segment.

Thank God You're Here (australian version) all the way! Micallef, Woodley, Hamish, Matt Newton, its bloody hilarious!

Avoid home and away and any other soap show. Also i'd say avoid underbelly too.

What i do recommend is Wilfred and any show by the chaser boys (CNNNN, Chasers War on Everything etc).

reply

Yes - Love My Way & Underbelly are definately worth watching - the best drama series' produced in this country this millenium.

Wilfred. Mark and Sharon. By the same people.

Yeah, you would have to go with frontline, the games, the hollowmen and the micallef program. The first 3 are subtle satires on the news teams, the olympics and politics, you may not get all the australian references. Real stories grows on you, mainly because of Ryan Shelton cracking me up. And Kath and Kim is ok, but i'm not a huge fan, but its iconic.

reply

Big Bite - a few sketches on that had Mr. G :D

reply

Definitely check out the Adventures of Lano and Woodley, it is an excellent show.
Also try Spicks & Specks and the Chaser's War on Everything.

Sad to say, if it's comedy you're looking for, I don't think that's something that Australian TV generally does very well at all. It's obviously a matter of personal taste, but for me most Aussie TV comedies have been cringe-inducing.

"Kath and Kim" was really good in the early years, but sadly it couldn't survive its own success -- it fairly quickly grew too self-aware and formulaic. (I hear the same thing happened to the recent US remake, which has died something of a death, apparently.)

Shows like "The Chaser's War on Everything" I personally wouldn't touch, and never want to see again. It's never been as funny as the people who make it clearly think it is, and even when they have reasonable ideas, they are way out of their depth in executing them -- almost every gag they set up dies in the arse almost instantly. It's a show for people who think acts like sneaking into a supermarket and saying inappropriate things on the store intercom is clever, witty or perceptive social commentary.

As for Aussie soap operas, well ... they're soap operas, made cheap and fast, and hardly quality drama.

There are some good quality dramatic mini-series we've had -- a couple that come to mind immediately is one called "The Dismissal", and a very recent one called "Underbelly". I personally have my doubts how good they would seem to non-Australian audiences, simply because they may not be sufficiently aware of the real-life events on which these shows are built, so they may not make as much sense without pre-existing knowledge. Having lived through both myself, I really can't tell.

And in the same context is one of my own favourite Aussie comedy shows, called "The Games". It's a fictional (though very close to the bone) look at the team involved in mounting the 2000 Summer Olympics here in Sydney. It's very black, and very very funny. I highly recommend it.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.
