Who else was outraged at Ms Wheatley?

I'm talking about the teacher whom Jonah threatened(after much much provocation) and got expelled as a result. I mean c;mon, what a useless teacher, no warmth, no compassion, and what good does shouting at a kid do? The portrait was bang-on though I thought, I remember many teachers like her.
His special class teacher, on the other hand, was excellent. She treat Jonah with patience, respect and warmth and she was the only one to coax some effort out of him. A point well made.

I don't blame her, honestly. Jonah always gave her such a hard time, I'm surprised it took her so long to flip out. Keep in mind she seems like a young teacher, and lacks the experience of handling these types of delinquents.

reply

Agreed with the OP. She was a vile woman.

..A bit more aggressively..and with oils..(Emily Fitch)..

I'm in two minds. At first I thought she was completely horrible and had something against Jonah but after rewatching it I think she was just one of those hard faced teachers who had had enough of putting up with him, but there are a few scenes where she shows that she is not completely against him

reply

pfft when?
shes nothing but a c*unt the whole time in the show.

reply

At first I thought she was just quite frustrated (understandably). As I watched the episodes, though, she began to appear increasingly shrill until the last couple, where she's shown to treat Jonah quite unfairly. Definitely the least likeable character from the show.

reply

Are you guys kidding me? Jonah was nothing but disruptive, rude, and downright disrespectful... In, AND out of class. She knew he was always behind *beep* getting started and had no tolerance for it.

reply

I agree with the profeshional.

The only reason people think Jonah didn't deserve to be treated like that is because he is portrayed as funny and Miss Wheatley is not.

Jonah did nothing to earn her respect and didn't deserve it. He really was a horrible kid and I wouldn't put up with it either. And in regard to her blaming him when he was provoked by the year 7's, it's a simple case of the boy who cried wolf.

Towards the end when she out-right embarrasses him about his spelling was definitely out of line, but by that point I really think she was on the verge of an emotional break-down because of his constant misbehavior and disrespect. She was visibly distressed.

I mean when you look at the things Jonah had done to her, it was borderline abuse. Calling her a bitch on several occasions, asking if she has her period, and making her believe she had hit Jonah with her car. It would take a toll. It's understandable that she would lose her cool eventually, I don't blame her.

It really was Jonah's fault, not all teachers can be expected to baby their students.

Don't get me wrong, Jonah is an hilarious character, but if I were a teacher and had to deal with someone like that, I would have no tolerance.

reply

I really disagree. Teachers must be patient and compassionate, just just to all students, but ESPECIALLY to students like Jonah. Like the teacher in Gumnut Cottage. She was always understanding and sweet to Jonah and look how he acted? He did well (as well as he could, at least) and behaved much better in her class. That was extremely realistic. All kids like Jonah need is understanding and patience.

I hate Ms. Wheatley

You've got to be kidding me. Jonah was a horrible, HORRIBLE student. No amount of special treatment could make a delinquent like Jonah ever improve. You cited the other teacher's treatment of him and Jonah's response as "evidence" that such treatment can bring out the best in such a student. You are forgetting that Summer Heights High is fiction and not a real documentary!!!

I totally sympathise with the Ms. Wheatley character. When I was in school, I can remember students like Jonah who did nothing but disrupt the class, when all I wanted to do was learn. The teachers would get way behind schedule. The extremely selfish behaviour of students like Jonah only disadvantages other students. Expelling Jonah was the right thing to do because despite being given special treatment and numerous chances, as well as "understanding and patience" (he received way more of this than he deserved), he continued to be disrespectful and disruptive. If you can't see this then you must be blind.

I had a student last year who called me every thing under the sun. He was rude, obnoxious and thoroughly unpleasant. I struggled to keep my cool, but I still taught him to the best of my ability because that's what you have to do. Every teacher in the school hated him, and eventually he got expelled. No one was happy about it, but we were relieved for ourselves and the other students.

It's not up to you to decide who you will and won't teach-you treat everyone equally. I was annoyed he got his C for GCSE for sure, as I don't think his attitude and work ethic deserved it, but you never know if he may repent one day and actually say sorry and thank me for my hard work. It's unlikely but you never know.

Jonah wasn't a bad guy, and his attitude to Mrs Palmer and the grudging respect he clearly had for Doug showed that. He was never overtly offensive to him, and Mrs Palmer knew that he couldn't help swearing, so she ignored it and focused on the positives. Miss Wheatly didn't-she flipped, took her frustration out on a student and that's not something any teacher should ever do.

Although I thought Jonah was hilarious, my sympathies are with Miss Wheatley in this show. Jonah's behaviour was deplorable, especially when he persistently kept asking her if she had her period and distracted her whole class making it impossible for her to teach.

My reading on the situation with Jonah and Miss Wheatly was that it was a satire to show how ridiculous things can be - it was well known that Jonah was highly disruptive at the best of times, and could only read at the level of a 7 year old child (hence the remedial classes at Gumnut College). So why was he in an English class taught by a young, inexperienced female teacher, trying to read books well beyond his ability? That situation was not fair for either Miss Wheatley or for Jonah.

Unfortunately, Emuboy, kids who are just not capable of doing the work are often in classes they aren't prepared for, and act just like this.

wow a lot of Jonahs on this board...

by far the most interesting comment. potty mouths writing insults, slinging mud, needing to be understood but without giving any one else's opinion credence, and ruining the possibility for intellectual discourse right here on imdb are fine examples of Jonahs.

sometimes im amused but mostly i skip immediately to comments of substance. i especially hate when people go back and forth making me have to open the next page to move on from some hateful debate.

the remedial teacher was an extreme push over. she succeeded because of the subject matter. jonah writing about himself pleased him. what a narcissist.

As a teacher, I could see myself being able to work with a kid who could at least read. but jonah is like...horrifyingly illiterate and so dealing with him in an english class would be challenging. how would any of you do it?

reply

That's not how you handle a kid like Jonah. She was an evil harpy.

reply

i was good w/ her until that scene namely b/c teachers are never supposed to make a kid seem dumb in front of the class....

Dear IMDB members stop complaining about grammar....this is the net...not elementary school

she was a bitch I hated her lol

I'm in shock that people are actually defending her actions in the last episode. Say what you will about Jonah and how frustrating he would be as a student, the way she talked down to him and humiliated him was more than bitchy. It was unprofessional. Asking him to give her "any T word, do you know what the letter T is?" was completely out of line and I would hope most people would see that!

At the start of the series I felt bad for her. Jonah was disrupting her teaching and thus effecting the learning of other kids. That doesn't change the fact she acted wrongly and inappropriately at the end. It doesn't matter how much of a problem student Jonah may have been, that does not excuse an adult, a TEACHER, carrying on the way she did.

She reminded me of the 'new' teachers I had in high school: the young inexperienced ones who truthfully aren't much older than the students they teach, so they assert their authority by being over the top and often unfair. Methinks if Ms Wheatley had employed a similar teaching strategy to the woman at Gumnut College, showing Jonah warmth and respect and positive reinforcement when he gets things right, Jonah would not have 'acted up' in her classes to such an extent. Instead she was nasty, belittling and humiliating. Of course Jonah wasn't going to try for her.

That was one of the best scenes in the entire show. They really built up the tension.

The fact of the matter is, situations like this occur in real life and schools shouldn't be placing such students in classes they can't handle. A teacher that lacks experience is in no way going to be able to teach a kid like that properly and it's sad to see any teacher talk down to a student whether it seems warranted or not. They are professionals and role models. The relationship Jonah had with the Gumnut teacher was touching. I wish there were more caring teachers out there but they are hard to come by. I had no problem finishing school but I can say without a doubt I had some horrible teachers that didn't give a *beep* They read you some crap and hand out worksheets and tests. That's not teaching.

Also, Ms. Wheatley was hott

reply

I agree. I feel as though Ms. Wheatley wasn't entirely cut out for teaching if she wasn't able to handle a single student.
Honestly, what did Jonah do that was so horrible? He talked in class. He played with things. It could have been a hell of a lot worse.
Did anyone else get the impression that she was a bit racist?
