Why James Gandolfini? He seemed like an awkward choice......

i know he's the producer, but he should've chose another interviewer. he kept doing the "We're on your side" and "no, thank you" crap that everyone feels obligated to say to soldiers. plus he was dressed up like tony soprano which made it hard to watch without thinking about the sopranos. other than that, it was a very moving program.

It's possible that because of the low budget they didn't wanna spend money on an interviewer. It's possible Gandolfini just wanted to meet the soldiers himself just so he could say what we all wanna say to them. ("Thank you." "We support you.", etc.)

Tony Soprano: Everything turns to sh-t.

I was wondering why him as well. Maybe because The Sopranos was a popular show with the soldier demographic, so they might be more likely to recognize and trust him and be pleased to see him in person? I don't know.

agree with the reason and agree that interviewer is not his strong point at all.

I think all the soldiers told a good story and some of the credit is due to the interviewer. It's just that after editing you only heard Gandolfini mumble at the end of each interview.

Why him? Because HE wanted to do this himself. HE wanted to give the soldiers a voice. He was the one who pushed for this documentary. It was something important to HIM. And he felt obligated to be there in person, this "big movie star" who came to meet each one of them, in a way, down to the "grunts" level.

It was something he felt was important, something he believed in, so he did it himself. Sure he could have paid to have someone else do it, but that isn't his style. He's just one of the guys despite being famous.
