Where can I see?

It's Oscar-nominated, it's short - i thought there'll be on YouTube, but i can't find it.

Sure you can. Try Google Video too.

Out of the three contenders that I've seen (No Time for Nuts, Maestro and this), this is by far my favourite film. I hope it wins.

I'm still absolutely baffled that Aleksandr Petrov's "My Love" wasn't nominated, though:

This was the only film that deserved to win, but in its absence at least "The Danish Poet" should.

You can watch Maestro over here:

(you must sign up, but there are lots of other films too)

"No Time for Nuts" can probably be found with a bit of searching. The other two films (Pixar's "Lifted" and Disney's "The Little Matchgirl") I haven't found yet.

i saw a clip of "Lifted", and it has to be the funniest 20 or so seconds of a short i've ever seen. I hate to say it and always seem to give a giant like pixar the glory all the time, but i hope it wins.

watch a clip here: http://awn.com/oscars07/?type=shorts&id=lifted

i saw a clip for Maestro and it didn't impress me at all. I watched "The Danish Poet" in class last week and I'll be brutally honest again...but it didn't impress me either. It was NICE though...something I enjoyed watching but wish it didn't look so digital and that the animator could have really benefited from a traditional medium, but also it was a story that didn't really make me care. It was sweet, but almost meaningless. I'd love to talk about my parents too but the story just didn't have spark.

again I'd say that "The Danish Poet" is a great short, but it shouldn't have been an academy nominee. it just wasn't profound enough.

reply

What can I say, different tastes. :p Funny how you're criticizing it for not being "profound", though, considering that the clip from "Lifted" isn't exactly "profound" either...

I found The Danish Poet to be very funny, though it uses a more subtle type of humour. And I do think that it had some things to say, though most were there more in a "by the way" fashion rather than being the main point of the story. The main point that I took away from it is that it's important to move around and experience life, because often nice things happen to you when you're not looking for them.

What do you think of the clips of Petrov's "My Love" that I posted? (if you're wondering, it's oil paint on glass)

Here's more about Aleksandr Petrov:

He won the animated short film Oscar back in 2000 for "The Old Man and the Sea".

well there's both humor in Poet and Lifted, and yes, both are very different kinds of humor...but something like Lifted I wouldn't EXPECT to be profound, is the thing. I liked some of the humor in Poet (those cows were hilarious), but the whole film felt like it was on this awkward balance and didn't know what kind of film it wanted to be...not saying every film and short needs to be strict and specific to exact genre's tho.

And i'll agree, you used a better description for Poet as being more "by the way" fashion. Maybe "profound" is a little too striking, more for films like feature drama's and thrillers, or something that's out to make a big emotional impact, etc.

And i did check out those clips for Petrov's film, and see...that's the kind of unfortunate thing that really eats away at me. Why a film like that get's shafted by the Academy and something like Poet gets selected (and i could go on with how more films, like Joanna Quinn's, didn't get nominated either). Not that one is, for lack of better words, worse than the other, but I would expect films like Petrov's to be considered high and talented competition, and Poet to be more of an average piece.

ive been looking everywhere online to find where i can see the whole film, but all i can find is a clip. does anyone know where to see the entire film?

reply

A CLIP of Maestro is not good enough, trust me. It's one of those short films where you have to watch the whole thing to get it. It's very interesting and clever.

Also, Maestro, No Time For Nuts, and Lifted are all not profound. If anything, I would venture to say that the Danish Poet is the most profound of the films nominated. The Little Matchgirl wasn't quite profound, but more elegantly depressing.

And what do you mean by "wish it didn't look so digital and that the animator could have really benefited from a traditional medium"? Digital? The Danish Poet was made with classic animation, unlike the other nominees. I'm not sure how The Little Matchgirl was made, but I read an interview with Torill Kove (the director of The Danish Poet) in which, when asked what draws her to traditional animation, she said, "I think it’s quite simply that it’s the only one I know how to do. I don’t know how to animate any other way, at the moment. I don’t know Flash. I don’t know the first thing about computer generated imaging. It’s just what I do."

So as for your idea of a "traditional" medium, I'm not sure what you were getting at.
