This may be the worst show on TV

If I felt like watching unlikeable, self-absorbed hipsters whine about how complicated their lives are --- set to a 'quirky' indie rock soundtrack --- I'd just hang out at a Starbucks in Silverlake and make conversation with the first person I see with a Macbook, which will be everyone in said Starbucks. This sorry excuse for a show should've stayed on Myspace.

reply

Exactly. Too bad not everyone will get the Silverlake reference. It was right on. Myspace, Facebook, that s h i t is so last week.

Worst show on TV?! Come on, this is better than most crap on television especially all of those lame reality shows.

Do you honestly think reality shows are better?

reply

..yes, i'd have to say this is the worst thing i've seen on tv in a long time...Including reality shows..

reply

Apparently you've never seen "Passions". Neither have I but there are always clips on The Soup (to make fun of it of course) and its hilarious to see what is actually on daytime television. Look for a clip online, I bet you'll find one about a monkey nurse or some witch lady...or maybe the girl who was out in the "ocean" and the sharks were surrounding her while her shirtless boyfriend hangs out on the dock seemingly "worried" with other shirtless men.

I'm embarrassed for the people on that show.

Ah, but see "Passions" at least can fall into that "So bad it's entertaining" category.. (The woman who i wound up marrying had a bizarre fascination with "Passions".. She knew it was bad beyond words, yet she kept watching to see what ridiculous level they'd go to next.)

"Quarterlife" was just unlikeable.

reply

VERY good point. I stand corrected. At one point my sister and I were addicted to Paradise Hotel. It was terrible, the people had no respect for each other or themselves, the whole premise was horrific. But, I guess like Passions...its like a car accident. You can't look away.

Very nicely put, couldn't agree with you more. You should enjoy this article then as well, it's about the show having NBC's worst ratings in 17 years!! As well as the possibility that it will be put out of it's misery after only one episode, a fate reserved for only the truly unwatchable.

I tried watching it on Myspace a bit. I just...didn't get it. I saw no drama whatsoever, no comedy, no horror, no thrills. So...exactly what the hell is this supposed to be? Is it intended to originate a genre called "people simply chatting about nothing interesting?"

Far worse shows currently on television:

Moment of Truth
Two and a Half Men
CSI: "NY" and "Miami" (yeah, quotes are there for a reason)
Law & Order: SVU
Criminal Minds
NCIS
One Tree Hill
Back to You
According to Jim

I mean, seriously.

I have to agree that this is like Passions, in a sense. When I first went away to college, there were a few girls down the hall that watched it everyday and I was friends with them, so they invited me to watch it with them. It became an everyday thing... And I'm a guy who hates soap operas and had never watched one from start to finish, but yet I watched it for at least a year or two on and off. It was a ridiculous show and I still can't believe I watched it for that long.
That's how I feel about this show. I heard a buzz about it and thought I'd give it a watch. I wasn't too turned off by the pilot, but I wasn't addicted enough to make sure to watch each new ep. But a couple of days ago I went on nbc.com and started watching an episode every night. It's like an addiction now, but I can't understand it. I think it is a good idea, in theory, but it has poor acting and a bad storyline. I just get frustrated with it almost in every scene. I have watched 5 episodes and I guess that 6 was the end of this season. I will watch it tomorrow night probably. And I'm the type that puts down a book if I don't get into it and never picks it up again. Who knows, maybe my taste is just way off lately, I kind of like 10,000 BC when I saw it on Saturday... haha
I think what it is is that I just started missing having regular shows to watch during the strike. I mean I have LOST now, but thats only one show. I need the Office, Scrubs, 30 Rock, Pushing Daisies and Chuck back.
The only person on the show who is almost a realistic person is Dylan, because I know people like her and maybe Jed, but other than that I can't connect to ANY of them at all, and I'm in that age range for quarterlife.

I think the quality of the acting comes down to personal opinion. I don't think a lot of people understand naturalistic performances like those in "quarterlife." As for the writing, dismissing is at a soap points to how easily the themes are being missed and how people don't seem to get how carefully the character interactions are structured.

While I can appreciate that you actually like it in some capacity, I just can't buy it as being "something so bad it's good." I reserve opinions like that for purposely inoffensive, redundant fluff like "Monk" and "Psych."

reply

I think what it is is that it's kind of a depressing show when you watch it. I can relate to what it's like being 25 years old, which I am. These are definitely frustrating times. I wish it was a little funnier, I guess. Don't get me wrong, I must like it deep down, or I would not have continued watching it. I just don't like some of the characters. The interactions can seem a bit forced at times. But at the same time, I think it seems more real life than even reality tv, which often seems very scripted. I think the fact that it is this raw, is what bothers people the most. I also think that the fact that it did poorly in ratings has nothing to do with how good or bad the show is. It just didn't have the right kind of following from the get-go. Networks don't like shows that take a while to get their following. I think it will have a great future on Bravo or even online, where it was originally made. I'll probably continue watching it, too. It's better than a lot of shows on TV anyway.

The worst shows on TV right now are American Idol and Big Brother.

reply

I have to disagree...i just finished going through my own quarter-life crisis, and trust me, if you've been through one, a lot of what is verbally said by the characters and the emotions that they go through hit very close to home. the fact that your 25 and technically an adult but your life is not put-together makes it dramatic enough. trust me, for those who experienced it, this show is pretty honest.

reply

This show definitely speaks to a specific age demographic of 25 year olds and an even smaller genre of within that. But I kind of like that it doesn't generalize it's characters so that ALL can relate. That makes them more interesting. I do believe the blog spots make interesting observations about young people and how they feel or how they act. I wonder though if that could be appreciated by anyone else who isn't like these characters or around the type of persons who exhibit these types of behaviors.

As for a lot of people saying how the acting is bad and it's the worst show on TV. It's funny that there are MANY shows that aren't good on right now that are far far worse than this, and yet everyone jumps on the same bandwagon slandering this show. I mean, come on. Seriously?! You either must not watch that much TV, or you have really bad taste.

reply

It's nice to see that there are finally some people talking positively about the show. I was worried for a while that I was the only one who even watched all the episodes.

i know, just thank god for shows like wife swap to keep us alive!
