Anti-Catholic bigoted picture

From beginning to end, Catholics are portrayed as evil, or in case of Native woman who is Catholic, completely stupid. A movie that presents itself as anti-bigot is in fact extremely prejudiced itself. No anti-christian stereotype or portrayal was left out.

I'm christian and I wasn't offended.

reply

I totally agree with TripJazz. We christians should be ashamed of what happpend in the name of our religion.

Peeres,

I find it odd that the OP seemed more concerned about the characterization of some christians than the mistreatment of the Native Americans.

My first instinct was to care about the victims.

reply

Agreed, TripJazz,

Any person with a good heart would care about these children. Many Catholic nuns and priests simply were, and are, the abusers of children. It's really sad because the Catholic Charities do such good work. I wonder how much funding that would have gone to help people has been diverted to pay for lawsuits from these abuse cases.

Abuse affects many people and many generations. This film portrayed this in a powerful and beautiful way.

Yes, the film surprised me. I had no idea this happened. In retrospect, I shouldn't have been surprised.

Unfortunately a lot of cruel things happen in this world.

reply

So because someone who hates Catholics made a film, it's therefore true, and not only true, but to be fully embraced as true by people like you?

reply

Posting so much doesn't help your narrative.

I, for one, know many, many, many friends and relatives who were abused at the hands of good christians in the boarding schools. One elder was actually ripped out of her Mother's arms and taken off to the boarding school near Hopi to learn how to become a servant for the nice white people. Another, from Canada, was sodomized and beaten, over and over. I have lots of stories like this.

What if Muslims had run these schools, would that make you feel better? Why use the word liberal here? It has no relevance whatsoever.

Good Catholics and Christians will open their minds, realize the errors of the past and help the healing process. The Catholic Charities are a good example of the good. The boarding schools are examples of the disgusting. Denying something because it makes you uncomfortable removes your credibility. I'm very sad for you.

It has been happening for a LONG time, my grandfather even had a joke about it, "Your know the white man has converted you once he is inside of you" and that went for the girls and boys. A lot of the elders refuse to talk about it, and since many of them are dieing of old age, it is a part of my father's history that may be lost, until this movie came out. The catholic church has been known for doing some of the most vile , inhumane acts to other human beings,.....and that was LONG before they got to my people.

reply

How easy it is to feed into an ugly narrative of religious bigotry. In my experience, only self-described liberals hold such unsupported hatred towards Christianity in general or Catholicism specifically. Studies of children raised and educated in Catholic schools show there is less abuse of children by Catholic priests and nuns than in the general population. I bet you didn't even bother to check. The bigorty just felt too comfortable.

reply

If a film's intent is to victimize, bully and bastardize a religion, without context nor proof, would it be okay for the OP to mention it? Or is it open season for religious bigots and their enablers to attack Catholicism?

reply

If you were interested in investigating what happened in many of these Indian schools you would find out that Catholics were not the only religion involved. If you're foolish enough to call me a liberal based upon the information that I'm sharing here, you really are a sad case. I was very glad to see this movie even though it is not going to win any Oscars. I spent many of my growing up years in Brigham City, Utah, the site of another Indian "boarding" school and I was so happy when they finally shut down that horrible place & stopped forcing those little ones to leave their families only to be treated like unwanted burdens in a place they didn't want to be in the first place. Being in Utah, you should be able to guess the Catholics had nothing to do with that school - the mormons proudly took all the credit for the wonderful work that was being done to "save" those children. Many of my friends in 7th & 8th grade lived at the boarding school, but attended school with us. However, as soon as the final bell rang, it was over for the Indian kids; it didn't matter what special program was going on at the school, they had to be on their own bus back to the boarding school. They were not allowed to leave the boarding school to come out for a school dance, to go to a movie or to attend a properly supervised party at a school mate's house. It was explained the same way to all of us - the Indian kids are different and they cannot be allowed to do the same things as the white kids nor to have the same freedoms and we don't have enough people to supervise them if they leave the grounds of the boarding school so please don't cause problems by asking for them to attend these parties and dances. Boy, they were really helping them to acclimate to life off the reservation! And, big thanks to those of you who were kind enough to try and make a point that it really wasn't a church that needed defending after seeing this movie, but compassionate hearts are needed for those who have been hurt by powers that be & authority figures - little children lost their lives, most were denied a childhood & now they are still being told that they are not victims, oh no, the Catholic church is the victim. Really? Does that play well with many groups any more?

reply

And when it didn't happen, or there exists no proof that it did, or a depiction of it in a film provides no perspective or context to it, how then do you feel?

reply

Don't know how you can claim there is no evidence that it happened. There is plenty of evidence. You obviously know how to use the internet. Are you just to lazy to look it up?

reply

Not all Christians are Catholics. And not all Christians care about religious bigotry towards other Christians. Many of us call them Democrats.

reply

You lost any remaining credibility you had with that statement right there.

reply

The OP is representative of a lot of religious folk. They have an arrogant higher than thou view of themselves and use the fact that they're religious to claim some kind of superiority. And the fact is that persecution of people because they don't follow one religious doctrine or another is rampant.

Abuses carried out at catholic schools or by catholic leaders is common and it's even more common for them to deny it, cover it up and try to use that higher than thou attitude to divert attention away from the crap they do. Calling out these hypocrites is not anti catholic, it's just fairness. You're no better than anyone else just because you're catholic and you will be called out when you step out of line.

reply

"A movie that presents itself as anti-bigot is in fact extremely prejudiced itself."
The fact that you contradict yourself in your own thoughts and words indicates that the stupidity lies within you. The fact that there have been numerous incidents of abuse and murder among the native peoples by members of the church and government institutions also contradicts your lame accusations.
Anyone who truly believes in the teachings of the Christ could never assume such a narrow point of view about such real life based crimes.

reply

First, Alfriend, do you understand the term "contradiction"? Second, the film makes no effort to substantiate its narrative about the church as serial child murderers of Indian children. Third, I don't believe in 20 yearsd on these coments I've witnessed a reaction of defensiveness as palpable as yours.

The OP is correct on every point he or she made. To put the best light on your response, I think the OP's questioning the indictment of Catholic clergy triggered an angry leftwing reaction on your part, a reaction lacking even the most minimum amount of reflection or sensitivity towards Catholics on your part.

A film that undermines its own narrative (by bullying and disparaging Catholicism with artistic slander) is hardly a good film at all.

reply

For the love of god, who is the bigot here? I know many religious people who are decent, honest people (liberal and conservative). And I know many religious people who are not (also both liberal and conservative).

Please don't make stupid political assumptions based on a person's view of religion.

And BTW, I am am not a democrat.
