Tell me what actually scared you in this movie

...because i sure can't recall seeing one scene that was even remotely frightening. The creepiness factor that everyone's talking about was nonexistent for me and it probably wouldn't have been if they had edited this movie in a lot less annoying and jumbled manner. The back and forth between times and settings wasn't confusing so much as unnecessary, and for me it detracted a lot. That super psychic has also got to go down as one of the dumbest characters in any horror movie, especially one that is supposed to play out with a serious and realistic tone; he's annoying to look at, listen to, and anticipate in the coming scenes. After seeing this film i have to say i was very disappointed with all the promotion it gets here on imdb, because recommendations from real horror fans are almost always worthy of at least a checkout. As a big fan of asian cinema, especially horror, this film had to be the one that required the most patience from me while offering the littlest reward, and one that I cannot for the life me recommend.

Were you even paying attention to the movie? Or walk out 10 minutes before it ended?

EDIT: After viewing your post history it seems like this is a regular thing for you...

No i didn't walk out at all just found this movie honestly disappointing. I would also like to know what you think is a common thing for me? The fact that i'm usually disappointed in high-rated movies? Its actually not at all common, but for the ones i'm especially disappointed in, i come on here and voice my opinion...what is so absurd about that? You speak of my postings as if i'm some troll when i'm just expressing my opinion that you should not be personally offended by, but clearly you are. Also, you did not answer me. I was paying attention and found nothing scary. Tell me what you found scary.

reply

i agree wholeheartedly, i was trying hard not to fall asleep watching this. I expected the movie to turn scary at any moment and i felt really disappointed when it never took me there.

Pretty much any other Hong-Kong/asian horror film that i've seen is better than this boring mockumentary, and that is saying A LOT.

reply

Yeah it's a regular thing with this dude - an IMDB troll but it's all good fun.

Haha...yea they shout "you just don't get it" as if they are in the minority of true film interpreters. Most of the time there is nothing to get, or at least not as much they imply there is. Plus i love how American movies get so much hate, when the pretentious people are the ones referencing bad films. Its not our fault they're missing out on some great American cinema.

I viewed this as a supernatural suspense movie with some horror elements, and it was very effective. There were a few scenes that were shocking, certainly, and the Blair Witch-style running-through-the-woods-at-night scenes were good and creepy.

I agree that the CGI "ghost" effects were a little cheesy, and it's a good thing they weren't overdone. They were like aftermarket add-ons to enhance the overall suspense.

I guess if you were waiting for the big "scare" scene, you would be disappointed, but after about 20 minutes into the movie, I realized that it wasn't going to happen that way and I just enjoyed it as it was presented with no further expectations.

I don't know what you expect to gain from this thread, as I find once my mind is made up about a movie, not much can change it, but what the hell...

***SPOILERS***

For me the creeps came from making connections between seemingly unrelated pieces of the "puzzle." The face that Kana drew, the pigeons, the traits of the Kagutaba cult, etc. Also, the video segments where you see a ghostly figure in the background, or when Marika was sleepwalking were nicely creepy. But the "big scare" for me came at the very end. Seeing Kagutaba's face and the subsequent events were absolutely horrific for me, but only after taking the ride of the whole film.

***END SPOILERS***

I see this film as a "the more you put in to it, the more you'll get out of it" piece. It's not passive entertainment; you have to really invest in to it and pay attention. Even so, while I did detect common threads that were creepy, I wasn't able to put all the pieces together, which kept me off balance and even more uncomfortable that I couldn't figure it all out.

But hey, in the end, it's just a movie, and there are a LOT of them out there. Not everyone likes the same things, and vive la différence!

Nan00k, finally someone answers the original question without spurting out all their B U L L S H I T! You actually mentioned some scenes in the film that scare you or creep you out, AND! you provided spoiler warnings...

Basically I agree with you on every level, especially the need for a viewer's full attention and "investment" in the story.

I have to agree, the psychic was terrible and any scene involving him just put me off. I only got creeped out once and that was during the first 8 minutes or so.

Seems like typically those who don't dig movies like these are hack n slash gore hounds or asian movie xenophobes (zomg subtitles and slooooow pace/no hack hack wtf?!). Do yourselves a favour and stick to the Freddys and the Jasons - you'll feel much better.

reply

I'm sorry, but that's kind of stupid, grouping people who don't like this movie as people who only watch hack/slash films.

I watch those kinds and I also watch other slowbuilding movies, that rely on tension building with a great payoff.

This film wasn't even remotely scary, despite trying. It wasn't as experimental as the film is touted as being. The film was horribly overrated, and wasn't really that good.

Now, A Tale of Two Sister's, that was a good asian horror movie, where as this movie is not.

not at all. I´love asian movies, and am an avid horror fan, and not of the hack´n´slash type. I love slow burners and horror movies that don´t necesarrily involve gore. Had my hopes up for this one, and while I think it was very well made and a bit creepy, there wasn´t anything scary at all.

reply

So you couldn't be any more wrong. I love Asian horror and have watched a TON of it and I probably watch more subtitled movies than not, these days.

One of the most boring, non-scary, uninteresting movies I've watched.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

I loved this movie. While it didn't 'scare' me per se, it made me feel this very uneasy and unsettling emotion throughout. A few times I almost had to turn my eyes away (the excorsism on the boat).

All in all, a very rewarding movie.
