Thing I really liked about this movie..

I watched the movie and loved it. My friend kept saying "Perhaps if I were Japanese I would pick up on some of the assumed context, sort of baseline cultural knowledge of different supernatural creatures or ceremonies, it would make more sense. She was saying that, for example, you were watching a horror film set in Ireland, in some old manor house and during the night there was a woman wailing outside the windows. You would know it was most probably a banshee, and you would know that she wails for the pending death of a family member of the manor house owners.

I have seen a lot of Japanese horror and also taken quite an interest in Japanese culture and folklore. I know there are LOTS of stories and mentions of crows for example that carry a lot of backstory, but I had never run across any mention of pigeons. So I spent a couple of hours searching the net.

Nothing. As far as I can tell, there is no supernatural, ghostly, or kami association with pigeons. The director seems to have made it up.

There are a few tales about dogs. However nothing I could find said anything about slitting the belly of pregnant dogs as an offering. Again the director seems to have made it up.

What does that mean? Just that the Japanese audience would be equally lost. They too would be confronting the creepy unknown.
