Did anyone else find it creepy...

Did anyone else find it creepy when they realised that the man he had a crush on, Graham's best friend, was played by Stephen Curry's own BROTHER?

Also, for anyone who remembers Ugly Dave Grey or has watched Blankety Blanks on tv1 over the last few weeks, how poor a job did Angus Sampson do? I mean I knew he was a pathetic actor but WOW, that really SUCKED.

he did slightly resemble Ugly Dave, but only due to wardrobe, in my opinion.

Nah I didn't find it creepy at all. Interesting though...

Angus Sampson's accent was terrible, although they only needed someone to play Ugly Dave Grey for a few seconds in the movie so Sampson didn't bring down the whole mood of the film. There were some quality actors here, but I'm always going to remember Sampson for his role in You And Your Stupid Mate, a movie that shows Australia's movie industry is in serious trouble.

It actually made me wonder whether Graham did have a crush in real life and was actually gay, or whether the film was just implying this as one of the reasons why he never married. I didn't know it was Stephen Curry's brother but that must've felt a bit weird on set.

I thought he actually eventually came out? Or it was an "open secret" sort of deal?

I guess it must have been strange initially, but I think Steven is a real professional, and I reckon that might just run in the family.

I think it was an open secret. I just asked my parents and my dad said he didn't know but it seems likely and my mum said she knew. Apparently Hinch outed his long term lover in the 90's, so that would probably have been a bit of a clue :)

I dunno about sexiest, but surely top five... even though I am straight :)

hehe a few seconds of Angus is a few seconds too many IMSO. I haven't watched that film (I have taste) but I saw him in that effie show and instantly took a dislike to him, though he was actually pretty good on Thank God You're Here. As to the gay, I think as I said below that it was a fairly open secret, like Rove being unfunny or Satan being the force behind Comedy Inc.

reply

yes I did find it creepy when I realised at the end of the movie. Thought Angus sampson was Ok, he did look ugly

reply

Just on the gay thing...it was well known in the industry, and commonly accepted that he was gay. Pretty sure it was mentioned during his funeral, but Bert Newton has definately made comment on it.

reply

Of course he was gay though most people at the time, particularly his audience, preferred not to know. Kennedy often dropped hints, like just before the Crow Call when he said something like "I love the birds, don't believe the rumours".

Re: his funeral. I don't think it was mentioned at his funeral. But St. Kilda Football Club players acted as pallbearers (Kennedy grew up in nearby Balaclava so the Saints were his team) and jokes were made that Kennedy had finally achieved his wish of being laid by 6 St. Kilda footballers...

Angus Sampson's portrayal of Ugly Dave Gray was atrocious. Mercifully he was only on for a minute or two.

I enjoyed this film, but it must be said the best part was the archive footage at the end.

skizziks spelled backwards is skizziks

Why was it creepy? it's not as if they had a sex scene or even kissed. They are both good actors.

reply

I'd forgotten that he was his brother... but i seem to recall him mentioning something about it on thank god you're here... but no i don't find it creepy.
As for him being gay, i thought it only came out after he died?

reply

I didn't think it was creepy, and may have enhanced the performance. Although it was heavily implied that Kennedy was in love with him, the brotherly love surely made it not that big a stretch for them to play best mates that Kennedy had feelings for. The fact that they don't look alike made for casting genius.
Be thankful that Gussy Sampson got the Ugly Dave role, on Triple M's radio show Get This he said he was after the Bert role... that would have made for the worst movie ever made. Although I did find his noodle ads amusing, in a childish way

Angus Sampson had what, 3, maybe 4 lines? How can you possibly judge such a minor role so harshly? He looked alot like Ugly Dave Gray. That was the main requirement for the extent of the role he was playing.

You know it makes sense.

Sampson was horrible. In fact, he IS horrible.
