Okay sooo I got a question. Is the girl that goes back in 2007 the schoolgirl in the museum that looks like her or the one that buys the cyborg in the auction. Or are they the same person..?

But of course whenever you deal with time travel you're going to run into these paradoxes: How did the creator of the robot ever decide to make one that looked like her? The best explanation would be that initially it was a generic robot that the girl in the future bought, but she ended up changing the future.

I'd say we're dealing with 4 alternate realities. There's the one we never get a view of where the main guy must have built a cyborg and had a great life with it. Then the future girl for whatever reason must have felt a connection to the owner and decided she wanted to meet him. This leads to universe 2 where the old man sends a princess leia-like message for the owner saying he always hoped he'd meet the girl again but he got shot instead. Then this leads to universe 3 which the majority of the movie takes place including the ending with the girl traveling back in time to inspire the guy to create her to begin with and so on and so forth. Then the last universe is the one the writers leave us left imagining. We now see rather than the creator growing old and finally repairing the cyborg, future girl comes back to be with him for real. So essentially it is the evolution of the creator getting increasingly happier futures.
sharei can understand some confusion. this movie exposes many paradox possibilities. im sure it would have been less confusing if she showed him the gift she got from him in 2007. with the real girl going back in time again after the cyborg is destroyed just makes you think they got married. makes you wonder if he still rebuilds the cyborg like he did before she traveled back to him 2nd time.
shareIts a beautiful movie if you understand it as you need to watch it twice to get what it mean all that time travel that happened in the movie so i watched the ending twice and now i understand all what happened in the movie so let me explain it to you :
first there are 2 girl one is cyborg that he built and the other is museum girl ,
what we see in the movie the first meeting between the boy and the girl is not the robot girl its the museum girl who time traveled from the ending of the movie 2130 or something to the 2007 after she put the robot girl's memory in her head just to meet him in real live , then she back again to the future when the bou is already dead for 60 years or something but she can't stay in her own time so she return again to the time that the boy lose the robot that we see in the movie so the real girl time travel twice .
as for the robot girl we see him meet the boy in the 2nd meeting and she time traviled from the near future before the museum girl times to meet him and what we see in the movie till the end .
hope its clear now as i didn't catch it and i thought the movie is a mess after 1st watching :)
There is a failure in the plot of this movie. The guy only created the cyborg because he fell in love with the real girl, but since the girl was born only decades after the guy died, the guy would never built the cyborg and thus the story would never happen. But it is just a movie, a beautiful one I must say.
shareNone of this made any sense to me. I though the old version of the guy said he sent the robot to protect him against getting shot in the restaurant as a young man? How is that supposed to fit in?
Also, are you saying that the very first part of the film when he meets the cyborg for the first time is a different cyborg to the one who returns to the Daimaru store a year later?
I literally have no clue what this story was supposed to be!
