Irish films in general are a hard sell to Irish audiences the most recent example 'Wide Open Spaces', starring Ardal O'Hanlon (Father Ted) took just €8,000 at the Box Office and was pulled after its 1st week. Box office statistics show that Irish audiences have an enormous appetite for Hollywood blockbusters and prefer to wait for the DVD release of Irish films.
Ireland does not have the audience size (4.5 million population) to justify spending €200 million to produce one film, so the budgets for Irish movies don't go much higher than €4 million and are generally co-produced with other countries, in fact the entire budget at the Irish Film Boards disposal is in the region of €19 million.
Of the over 7,000 movies produced each year an average of five are Irish films. It is simply not an industry that is supported in Ireland, so movies like 'Anton' are very rare. 'Anton' like 'The Lives of Others' is based on true events. Unlike 'The Lives of Others' 'Anton' had a tiny budget of €500,000, so it is a remarkable accomplishment. Unlike a lot of Irish films 'Anton' got worldwide distribution (under the title Trapped) and despite the typical begrudgery that afflicts certain insecure Irish people 'Anton' was a great success.
