Was the movie Precious a regressive black film?

Do you think this movie promotes the “poverty porn” genre? Did it also promote black stereotypes?

Did it deserve heavy attention from white film institutions/award shows at the time?

Or did it rightfully tell a story that needed to be told?

It was set in the Reagan era. What do you expect? 1987 (the films setting) was the height of Reaganomics. Low income people and those on social benefits were in the hole at this time. Precious was just trying to survive the best she could. It isn't really ''poverty porn'' more like a piece of history and an example of the strength of the human spirit.

I can imagine there was many people like Precious during that time and not all of them had the type of spirit to survive it. Precious could have easily chosen suicide but she didn't, not even after the (spoiler) terminal diagnosis.
