Mo'nique recently stated on Watch What Happens (04/2015), while promoting her new movie,
"Black Nird" that the reason for Precious stealing the bucket of chicken was to feed the baby, growing inside her.
I didn't get this from the movie. I thought she was just hungry. This movie takes place in the early 1980's and Precious eventually dies from AIDS.
" Precious eventually dies from AIDS."
That never happens in the book or the movie.

Dieing from AIDS was entirely possible during that era however as the antivirals only in experimental use.
