Albany, New York. I knew a girl named Kelly when I was in high school. She was overweight and was teased and picked on. We became friends. She had what I presumed was a normal life, but a closer look revealed her mother to be somewhat abusive and not "all there," though not nearly to the point of Mary Jones. Kelly graduated 2 years before me, so we lost touch. A few years later I ran into her, and she told me about her plight since graduating high school.
At some point she and her mother had a bad argument, and Kelly left the house with few belongings. She stayed with friends/other family. A few months later she tried to go back to her mother only to find that the mother moved to California and didn't tell her. Kelly was forced to effectively move to a shopping mall, and slept outside on the pavement at night. By the grace of God she was hired for 2 menial jobs at said shopping mall where she could work during the day.
A few months go by and came Christmastime. The next time I run into Kelly (at the same mall) she asks that I give her a ride to the seedy motel where she is now living with a boyfriend. I oblige. The boyfriend came outside when we pulled in. He was probably 20+ years older than Kelly, less than half her size, and didn't have any teeth. Though unemployed, she seemed happy.
Fast forward a few more months. Kelly left the boyfriend after he turned abusive. She is now a prostitute and lives off the charity of her tricks. Come to find out she's working for a violent "pimp" who is constantly abusive. She is assaulted by a rival group of prostitutes wielding sticks. A passerby calls the police, and Kelly enters hospital. To complicate matters she is now pregnant.
More time goes by. She has the baby. She now lives with her baby in her own "apartment" in an establishment for single mothers without support. She does not comprehend how to take care of the baby. One night she grows frustrated after it won't stop crying and so throws the baby against a wall. Kelly is arrested, the baby taken from her, though it survives.
After being released from prison, Kelly finds work as a checkout girl. After her probation ends, she takes off for North Carolina to start over. Again.
