Precious' mom was severly mentally ill.

Was Precious' mom supposed to have bipolar disorder or something like that? There was something severely wrong with her, and she reminds me of a lot of bipolar patients I've seen over the years. That scene of her dancing in a bathing suit while we watching the 100,000 dollar pyramid disturbed me, as a mental health professional, much more than any of the other scenes in this movie. This woman was seriously demented and needed help herself. She threw a newborn baby on the ground!

Also, people on this board are too PC. What... is wrong with you guys? lol

reply

She herself was a victim of abuse.

when u say Mary was abused. how? & by who?

that's no excuse tho.

reply

Well it's kind of obvious when her issue is the fact that she's pissed off with Precious for being more desirable to her boyfriend than she is. She's totally not bothered by the fact that her boyfriend was an incestuous pervert but by the fact that she was losing his attention.

reply

You have got to be right bwing55543. To back up what you said: When she said "...that was my man. That was my *beep* man." Or when she said "It's that bitch's fault! She didn't scream. She didin't do nothin."

reply

Loneliness and desperation weigh heavily upon the soul

she threw a pot at Precious and knocked up her head

OP I believe Monique did say 'Mary' was bi-polar in an interview.

I think she was personality disordered. Definitely Narcissistic:

To the extent that people are pathologically narcissistic, they can be controlling, blaming, self-absorbed, intolerant of others’ views, unaware of others' needs and of the effects of their behavior on others, and insistent that others see them as they wish to be seen.

Narcissistic individuals use various strategies to protect the self at the expense of others. They tend to devalue, derogate and blame others, and they respond to threatening feedback with anger and hostility.

Close your eyes and pretend it's all a bad dream. That's how I get by.

reply

My thoughts exactly! I wouldn't wish anyone to endure this pain, to have a narcissistic parent. It's the worst thing ever!

If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten

reply

Yes there was clearly something not right with her. Emotionally. Therefore some form of depression.

I don't think Mary has bipolar.
I think maybe IE disorder mixed in with Narcissistic personality disorder

If violence cured Mental Illness we would've exterminated it centuries ago. Doesn't work that way.

reply

I still want her dead. Sorry if that seems cruel, but it's cruel to her victims leaving her free to commit willful acts of violence against them, and an illogical burden to tax payers to let her continue to live in their care within any institution. There comes a point where someone is too far gone upstairs to be helped, and that corpulent disgusting slag deserves what she gets when it all comes full circle. I was glad to see Precious stand up to her in the end, and walk away with her head held high. I rather enjoed this movie when for a while I didn't think I would.

YOU KILL HER THEN!

I agree that some people can't be helped, full blown psychopathy, can't have them around regular society.

reply

This is a movie showing what it is like to grow up under these conditions which are not addressed by society. For example, most of the women I have known in my life were molested by family members. My mother had a mental problem much like this character. No one notices, it is all in family, so nothing is done. This movie is trying to inform, not balance the books retroactively.

reply

I wonder about the mental problem.

but mostly I just think she was evil.

reply

I haven't gotten far enough into the movie to hear anything about mental illness. But the first time her mom was going off on her (when the counselor was outside her place speaking through the speaker) I had tears in my eyes.

I could never imagine telling my child he/she would never amount to anything and wished I would've aborted him/her. My heart just breaks for Precious. I could care less if the mother herself was a victim of abuse. There is no excuse for doing that to your child.
