Why was this movie made?

This is just another take on the "growing up in da hood" type films.
So, why was such a sad (and far fetched) film even made?
Did the producers deceide to make money by pulling on audiences heart strings?
Or do they think that black folks like to view ghetto stories only...?

Why do u think it's far fetched, I've seen some of these things that happen to precious actually happen in real life. What do u think is so unbelievable?, serious questions by the way

i'm not black but i related to this movie i lived in a place like this and had a mom like Mo'nique.

pretty cathartic watch for me.

I'm not black either and I don't have kids--but I related to this movie also.

I grew up with multiple disabilities and was in special ed classes for my well below grade level math skills

my dad never molested me but both parents verbally/emotionally raged @ me bc of my multiple medical conditions--and it only continued until I moved out. They had mocked the way the medications made me look...and bc their insurance was paying for it, I was supposed to take it.

Yes I was physically alive but if your parents can attack you just for existing what kind of life is that?

I had a higher reading/writing level than precious, but finding people who were safe was still very hard. I felt closeted even though I am heterosexual. Talking with most people was incredibly painful.

One guy spit in my face when he found out I had epilepsy and we were dating. I never saw him again.

Oh that's easy. They were making Oscar-bait. You want your movie to win an Oscar? Make it a miserable, horrible story with psychos, people being abused and going crazy, and/or make it with LGBT people in it, and you're gold. Bonus points if it has a tragic ending.

reply

The book has a tragic ending--but the movie was positive--she leaves her abusive family--and starts over with what she can at that point in time.

in the 1980's there was no 'cure' for aids for anybody including the well-to-do. So anybody getting AIDS had a death sentence. It's just that she died early.

It was an excuse for Oprah to make a movie mentioning herself (excuse me--Her Highness).
