Precious' mother was a good mom

I know a social worker and she said that Precious' mother was a good mother compared to other mothers in the community that she works in. I know that this movie tries to portray otherwise, but the reality in some communities shows otherwise.

reply

I reckon she lands in the middle of the *beep* up parents" scale.

yeah she was a real sweetie

reply

Did you actually watch the movie/troll?

reply

I was going to ask the same thing

reply

it's sarcasm (i'm not the op)

reply

Yes, in some communities she would actually be an above-average mom.

reply

Your kidding right, A mother who is abusive physically and verbally, insults her daughter and worst of all failed to protect her own from being touched and raped by her own father is a good mother? Are you *beep* me? She is the contrary of a good mom.

reply

Yeah, but she at least allowed her to continue to live in that apartment. She could have thrown Precious out on the street long before the time period in the movie began. At very least Precious had a roof over her head.

The mother received more money from welfare by having the child there. She knows how the system works. Beside that, she would have had to get up once in a while from her TV if Precious wasn't there to be her slave waiting on her hand and foot.

Whatever, "motherly" things she did for Precious (such as letting her go to school) were done to maintain her status with the welfare people by following their rules. Notice how sweet she is (at least tries to be) when around the welfare people. Everything was just peachy.

reply

You do realize that the only reason Precious stayed at that house was because her mom needed money from the government don't you? The same goes with Lil Mongo. How could you say she is a 'good' mother. Who cares if she would be considered better than most moms in that neighborhood or whatever - the point is - the things that she did to her child was terrible, disgusting and I can't even believe someone could ever live with themselves knowing how much trauma and pain she had caused to her own child. It's just terrible and it really makes me - sick.

reply

She was a terrible mother. The fact that other mothers are worse doesn't make her behaviour acceptable.

reply

No one said it was acceptable

reply

She continued to let her live with her because she was collecting welfare! She was in no way a mom. She was a crazy b!tch!

reply

Heint, get a psychological test please. If everything in the movie is heeded, that monster on top of everything else abused Precious the same way her dad did. You're a sick fool if you see this anywhere slightly near normal.

reply

Precious was doing all the cooking and cleaning. She was basically a free maid and welfare ticket.

reply

The mom was just sitting eating and yelling obscenities at her own daughter. Horrible. So glad she got out of that apartment.

reply

Her tossing Precious out on the streets would have probably been the best thing her mom could have ever done for her. She'd be better on the streets than in that house.

reply

only because she collected welfare from the state having her daughter in the house.

Precious's Mom: stupid b!tch i should have aborted you when i had the chance, aint nobody want you or ever will want you, you come and steal my man, get yo a$$ to the welfare....."

seriously? you (nor the social worker that you know of) has DEFINITELY NOT read the book this movie is based on. besides the physical abuse by her mother there is also sexual abuse. and in my opinion, all of the social workers i have come across/dealt with (i worked in the medical field) are such condescending "clinicians", have a holier-than-thou attitude in regards to their cases. i guess they get burned out from "having seen it all".

reply

Some of you clearly do not "get" what the OP is saying...specifically, that in many lower socio-economic communities, that there are MANY mothers that are actually WORSE than Precious' mother...so, RELATIVELY speaking, she's a good mom...the OP was making a social comment on the American underclass.

reply

Abuse happens in all socio-economic brackets, not just the lower class or working poor. Some of the most horrific cases have been documented in middle and upper classes. Yes, she probably was keeping Precious to earn an extra welfare benefit, but that's not 'abuse' any more than a rich woman unwillingly bearing an heir for her husband - neither woman wanted the child, they just benefited from the birth of one. Abuse is the neglect of needs, physical and sexual harm, and emotional torture. I've met parents across every income level and met extraordinary loving people regardless of how many coins were in their pockets; unfortunately, I've met some very cold, strict (and in some cases abusive) parents in each category as well. Even though this movie was set in the lower income bracket, can we please be respectful of not generalizing or stereotyping all parents as abusive monsters based on their salary? Thank you.

reply

You're a fool, Mega.

Mary Jones kept Precious because she was collecting welfare benefits for Precious and Mongol. Mary had a well stocked kitchen because Precious cooked for Mary and not for any other reason. If Precious wasn't bringing in some kind of income be it welfare or working wages, Precious would have been history in Mary's life.

Mary is a loathsome character full of bitter hate and resentment. Mary has not a drop of compassion or love in her entire being. She used Precious just as Carl did for their own desires or needs if you can call child rape a need.

Despicable animals.

Definition of DESPICABLE: deserving to be despised : so worthless or obnoxious as to rouse moral indignation

Hey! Do not compare evil people to animals! Animals are generally peaceloving and kind! Lay off! Use another term like satanists or demons. I'm just sayin'.

reply

See, I don't understand why concentrate on what Mary did to Precious... obvious it wasn't good... but this is why I didn't exactly like this movie... it falls short of explaining itself.
WHY did Mary Jones not interfere w/the rape before? What pushed Precious' father to take out his rage on his own daughter? What stops people like Mary Jones from going out to get a job? It's probably far more than "lazy."
The movie neglected to answer most questions I have about such situations. It was basically like... "in poor neighborhoods, kids sometimes get abused and mistreated. Some end up strong enough to run away and get help from the outside and remain mentally strong. Such is the case for Precious. She got away and managed to make a life for herself without constant abuse."
That's ittt... there was nothing else really answered. I wanted to appreciate the movie, but I couldn't 'cause it was very, very on the surface. The only thing I appreciated is what Precious imagined to get through the worse of it - herself singing by a piano in a nice dress, being on the red carpet, etc. Maybe teens in this situation can use that, too. And I guess the movie tells some teens that if you feel you're getting abused and it's more than your mind can take - it's OK to run away and tell yoru story somewhere; or at least to call Boys and Girls hotline and tell yoru story and have them advise you.

reply

She did it because she is a bad person.

Thank you. I would like to expand a little on the post you were replying to. We really don't need a reason as to why Precious' mom or dad was treating her this way because this movie was about Precious' life and how much she struggled.

IMO it would take away from the movie if they tried explaining "why" Precious' mom abused her in such a horrific way it or "why" her father raped her (as if there are any excuses for either of those I posted above.) Sometimes people are just bad .. they do evil things.

reply

Maybe you didn't pay attention Sammy. Mary clearly said, "He wanted my daughter, and that's why I hated her...Who was gonna love me?" Pretty clear.

reply

Just because there are worse mothers, does not make her good. I'd say she is worse than 99% of mothers in history.
