Do you suppose the first few had actual names?

My take is that Johann or 'John' had names for all his previous dogs, but after a time of having them didn't or couldn't think of any other names so he started giving them numbers. By the looks of it, he's had the same kind of dog for a very long time. I'd think that might be his way of dealing with the fact they die, like his children and lovers.

It's sort of similar with dogs I've had. When I was 3, my dad got me a dog and I named him Sherman. When I was 4, Sherman got rabis and my dad had to shoot him. A few months later my dad got me a new dog, I named that one Sherman #2. Sometimes I would call him #2 for short, but when I started Kindergarten and found out what other kids meant when the said #2, I stopped using #2 as a nickname and always said his full name, Sherman #2. Halfway through kindergarten, we moved, and Sherman was run over by the moving truck. I cried. Once we settled into our new home, my dad got a dog from one of his friends from work, his son had developed alergies to dogs and had to get rid of him. The dog already had a name when I got him, but I wanted to name him Sherman #3. I spent hours talking to Sherman #3 explaining to him that he now had a different name. After a while, he started responding to me calling him Sherman #3 or #3. Then, when I was 8, some people abducted Sherman #3 from my back yard and used him in a dog fight Michael Vick style. #3 was missing for a week, then one day, we found him in the back yard again, mauled up. He died a few weeks later. For Christmas later that year, my dad got me a new dog. This time, it was female. I couldn't name her Sherman because that was a boys name. Instead, I named her a female name similar to Sherman, Sarah. Her full name was Sarah #4. A few years later, her name was extended to Sarah P. Dog IV. Sarah #4 died back in January at 12 yrs old. I buried her in my back yard. I have yet to get a New Dog, but If I do, it's name will be either Sherman #5 or Sarah #5. I feel that John Amsterdam and I have a sort of connection because we both have named our dogs numbers. I wonder what number I'll make it too.

This is my signature, It's freakin' brilliant isn't it?
