Clive Owen in lead Aussie film role

Acclaimed film director Scott Hicks has signed a deal to shoot and produce his next feature film in South Australia. Hicks said the film, The Boys Are Back, would be shot largely in the wine growing area south of Adelaide, with work due to start in September.

Academy Award nominated British actor Clive Owen will take the lead role as journalist Joe Warr.

Hicks said he originally planned to make the film in Queensland but shifted production to South Australia following a $1 million investment from the South Australian government.

"I'm looking forward to showing the splendour of the Fleurieu (peninsula) to the wider world in the context of this powerful and emotional drama," Hicks said.

The $18 million dollar The Boys Are Back will be Hicks's first major film shot in Australia for about a decade.
Hicks gained international acclaim for the 1996 film Shine, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards, with Hicks receiving nominations for director and screenplay.

Film director Scott Hicks will set his latest production in South Australia because of a million-dollar lure from the SA Government.

The Boys Are Back will be shot around the Fleurieu Peninsula, south of Adelaide, and will star British actor Clive Owen.

The film is to be shot over 10 weeks from late next month at locations including the vineyards of McLaren Vale.

The Boys Are Back was to be made in Queensland until SA Premier Mike Rann, who is also Arts Minister, intervened.
Along with the SA Film Corporation, Mr Rann enticed Hicks to film in his home state.

"It gives me enormous pleasure to bring The Boys Are Back to shoot in South Australia," Hicks said.
"I'm looking forward to showing the splendour of the Fleurieu to the wider world."

It will be the first film Hicks has shot in South Australia since the Academy Award-winning Shine, more than a decade ago.

"This is a big film by local standards but we have wonderful crew, we have wonderful cast and all sorts of opportunities to exploit here in terms of locations," Hicks said.

"I've always loved filming here and I've always looked for opportunities to do it - and at last that has happened."

Single parenthoodOwen plays journalist Joe Warr who is thrust into single parenthood with sons from different marriages, and tries the no rules approach.
SA Film Corporation chair Cheryl Bart is excited about securing the movie production.

"This investment will assist ... to reach our target ... to increase production in SA to six feature films per year by 2014," she said.

"This will help South Australia's brand as the home of independent filmmaking."
The film Broken Hill was shot recently in and around Adelaide, Rachel Ward's film Beautiful Kate, starring her husband Bryan Brown, had a location shoot in the Flinders Ranges and at the Film Corporation studios in Adelaide.

David Lightfoot's production Coffin Creek is currently shooting at Thompson's Beach and Glendyn Ivin's Last Ride also has the Flinders Ranges as a backdrop.
Ms Bart says at least two other feature films are in pre-production.
