Wait a minute...I figured it out!!!!!

Not that it's a big stretch but this morning I was brushing my teeth and thinking about this film...then it hit me. For those of you who already got this, I have to apologize as maybe these plot holes take a little time for me to fill.
Dolph was an avenging angel coming back to town to right past wrongs. That is why he has no fear whatsoever of the evil townsman, never gets shot, and never seems to run from anything for that matter. He is a saint doing God's justice. His biggest pain is that he can never open himself up to his daughter (the young Britney Spears girl)because he is in reality, a father that has moved on to the other side. Hense..when he says to her.."Sometimes it's better that way." There are also other moments in the film which tell this story as in...the indian claiming an omen would come in the form of evil following a blonde man that would come into town...and the obvious fact that Enos says he was dead a long time ago.
If you think about it this way, this movie now makes complete sense and is actually quite good as it doesn't tell it to you straight but makes you figure it out. Good job Dolph.

I believe your interpretation is correct, especially concerning his daughter, Kiowa (who has nothing in common with Britney by the way!)

His daughter??? I watched it and didn't pick up that he had a daughter.
You are talking about the little 15 year old native/american girl, right?
How do you know this?
Please explain....

That was not his daughter. I was under the impression it was the daughter of his dead friend. I've only watched it once so ill have to check it again. This movie was fantastic, a worthy adaption of the classics mentioned above. Dolph is improving as a director and a writer, he is almost like a lower budget Sly Stallone. I love Dolph's action scenes, he's got alot of screen presence.

I was under the impression it was the daughter of his dead friend.

That's where a lot of people get confused about if you pay attention, she's his not, although his dead friend was the closest thing to a father she had.

It is not explicit and demands to accept the fantastic quality to it, but it was made so that could read the film as if Dolph's character was the ghost of her father... that's why he says "sometimes it's better that way" or "the answer is closer than you think" etc...

Ok, everyone here as a different story, here is my point of view, j.j just died at the begining of the movie by drowning, killed by Reno.

Dolph is not J.J, J.J is the girls step father, Dolph is the girls real father, who was killed many years ago when she was just a baby, nobody knows how and why, maybe they should make a remake Missionary Man 2, starting from the begining and how everything happen back then.

Now Dolph is back as an angel, to punish those who killed him and J.J, but at the end of the movie we see Dolph bleeding bad from the stomach when he had a gunfight with John Enos 3. So maybe that tells another mystery to the story, maybe that's how he died many years ago.

The Japanese title means "Ghost Rider".

There was a line in the film, actually I think it was in the promo, but cut from the film, where the mother says of Kiowas father "I only knew him briefly and only for one night." She also mentioned he'd been killed by a biker gang. I think Ryder then must be sent, or must be placed in limbo with the death of JJ, and in turn it's effect on his daughter brings about his appearence. It also sents into motion a chain of events that will bring Jarfe into town, so Dolph can in effect bring peace for his daughter, her family and town by stopping Reno, and gain his own revenge on Jarfe. It is a much better film when you consider the undertones. There's enough clues to suggest he's a ghost, and as well when he gets the shotgun from the guy, who reads a passage from the bible, and is also pretty torn up seeing Ryder walk in. The end shot is awesome. Got to say, this film grew on me. I just wish the producers hadn't scrimped on the budget and the support cast. Dolph had one hand tied behind his back, but I think he did a good job.

The early trailer (cut by Dolph I'm now sure) had material that gave more clues indeed while still seeming subtle to make the film good drama undertones that I wish were still there. A few years from now Dolph Lundgren will make Bergman-like movies!

Yes. I figured the exact same thing towards the end of the movie. He is an avenging angel, who comes back to protect his family and take revenge on those, who killed him about 18 years ago.
