How does he get so many celebs at once ?

I watched an episode the other day with Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert DiNero and Jennifer Saunders. Seriously, to get ONE of them on a US talk-show woud be a coup, but all four is a pretty good catch! (Note: I know that Pfeiffer and DiNero are in a movie together, but in the US it would be unusual to get both of them at the same time on the same show)

Many 'celebs' are just like us. They don't really like to be the centre of attention. If they know they are going to be on the sofa with other people, it's not such a strain.
They will have researched the show and know that it goes out to a huge audience. It is always fun; you get a drink; Graham is masterful and there's always at least one 'funny' person in the line-up who'll keep the conversation bubbling.
Greatest impact for the least effort.

Because he's good & celebs enjoy going on it! Seriously though he's spent about 15 years building up his brand & is now rightly getting the acclaim & success he deserves. I'm not familiar with many US chat shows but it seems although some are quite fun, they're mostly pampering to the celeb at the end of the day. Whereas Graham is happy to promote the celebs latest film/album/tour or whatever but isn't going to give them an easy ride - that's what makes it so fun & gives it an edge.

There's other things like how the sofa often contains a mix of English/American celebs. It's interesting seeing a starting-out Brit comedian banter with a Hollywood A-lister. It's extremely well researched & things like the red chair make everyone laugh no matter where you're from. Jennifer Lopez & Will Smith looked like they were having the time of their lives when the red chair segment was happening.

He does push it sometimes though. Kylie won't come back on after what he said about Dannii & there's been a few others who aren't fans of his.

I completely agree about the Brit/American mix. Sometimes the audience will go nuts for some Brit celeb I've never heard of (and why should I know them). I often times will be more interested or entertained by the Brit celeb.

I find most US chat shows too "proper," almost on the verge of coming off scripted (god knows if they're really scripted). Watch Ewan McGregor's appearance on, say, Letterman (it's on YouTube) vs. his appearances on Graham Norton. You see a big, big, big difference. Like, when McGregor said on Letterman something like, "We make fun of politicians in this movie. The politicians make it so easy." Then Letterman goes, "Oh, no. No, no. I don't do that. I don't make fun of politicians." If McGregor said that to Norton, Norton would've immediately jumped on the opportunity to ride on the joke.

I'mma go look for that Kylie interview now. You made me curious.

4 April 2014 (Season 15, Episode 1)
Russell Crowe/Cameron Diaz/Richard Ayoade/Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue appeared again on the show 15th May 2015, so I guess you're no longer a Minogue confidante!!

You can't really compare it to US talk shows, though. This show is done once a week and I don't know what type of competition it has. Compare that to

Conan
Letterman
Fallon
Ferguson
Meyers
Daly

that are done 5 times a week. Even if each of those shows had 1 guest a night, that's 30 spots to fill; you're not going to fill all 30 spots with A list celebs each night every week.

Kylie Minogue did actually return to the show

Yes, and she looks great!

When big Amerrican stars are plugging their film, song etc in the UK, there are only a handful of chat shows. The big three being Norton, Johnathan Ross (ITV) and Alan Carr (Channel 4).

So they all tend to get decent Yank guests plus the regular Brits.

Norton being the only chat show on the BBC also gives him an advantage when it comes to guests. He usually gets first pick.
