WTF?

I disagree with dial81's review of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone. I haven't seen any of the Evangelion anime before this movie, and so it didn't make much sense to me. Who are these Angels? They seem to be the "bad guys". If so, why are they called Angels? Why are children used as warriors? And why is there underage (although animated) nudity?

Angels are actually angels. You will find that a lot of things in the series have biblical references that play their part on the characters lives. The angels are not bad guys. They are trying to accomplish their goal of resurrecting another angel deep within NERV to start the Third Impact that will end all of existence. Ok that sounds bad huh but for more understanding get into the Human Instrumantality Project. It might give you some insight. Maybe look it up on Wiki. I really don't want to get into that right now.

reply

Children are used because they lack souls (no idea why but it is easier to sync with the artificial Angels)
In the Japanese version it is very specific it is always plural; why the English adaptations change this I do not know

The Angels are not "bad guys" (where did you ever get that idea from???) simply another possibility. Their names and descriptions are contained in the dead sea scrolls (which apparently were written by the aliens that seed Earth with life)

Japanese in general are perverts is my only explanation for underage anime nudity because it is a common theme

OP is a troll, no one is this stupid.

OP isn't a troll. When you're only this much in, a good chunk of the story just doesn't make sense yet, regardless of which version you're watching.

I'd just liek to say, haven't seen the series in years but fro mwhat i remember, this is pretty much the first couple of episodes slapped together, i was expectign something new the way the box spoke and how the makers said it's rebuilt, the animation is the same, every scene is the same. it might've been condensed but i also thought it was the first 6 eps not 3:S

well, a good thign is that i haven't got the series on dvd, so in that aspect, it's good. but advertising it's new etc, not soo much.

The angels are prototype humans. They are different forms that we could have taken. The 13th Angel is actually human. I think the label is just a label. The reason children are used is that any born prior to the Second Impact are contaminated from it. The Evangalions will nor work for them. And as for the underage nudity, Japan is a whole lot laxer about that. There have been many animes that contained underage nudity.

reply

Well the angels are failed human prototypes, they are examples of what mankind could have been. They are wannabes that couldn't make the cut and want a second chance by merging with Adam (now changed to Lilith) The official in universe reason as to why the pilots are so young is because adults cannot sync with an Eva. Of course, as seen in the offshoot 'Angelic Days', neither can Shinji and co after they hit the 'ol 1-8, and became young adults. The 13th angel is half human, like another character. ;)

Children are used because, and this is a spoiler, their mother's soul's are in the Evas. They need to be able to connect to them.

Those questions aren't answered in the first episodes of the old series either.
So no-one was smarter this far in the series. And everyone had those questions.
And actually the Kaworu guy at the end appears really late in the series, near the end actually. So the reboot rushed things. Seems the replies come sooner in the reboot than in the old tv series.

Even at the end of the old series most didn't make much sense to anybody. The old final movie even raised more questions than it answered ^^

And why is there underage (although animated) nudity?

Lol
Why not?
Weird question.

I recommend you to watch the original series, I saw this 15 years ago and I barely kept up with it. A newbie has no hope to make much sense of this.

We're given little to no explanation what EVAs are, what are the angels, what is their intent. What is NERV, what is their purpose, what is the purpose of Ikari (leader of Nerv), What is SEELE and its purpose, and they didnt even introduct chairman Keel Lorenz.

So it barely makes sense, without having the background info of the original series. Tp begin with and what is the new input or twist to the story. The first angel attack is almost a play by play remake of the first TV Ep, but as story progresses it diverges more and more.
