its fake get over it

Its fake. Yes, they said what they said, but not in the order it’s shown. This is what they call a fake documentary. During this movie Billy Mitchell played Steve Wiebe three times. They are friends in real life. Brian Kuh is a little weird, but every shot of him was taken out of context. Don’t get sucked in by bad editing. I have been to Funspot, I have done the tournament. Yes theirs favouritism but what is shown in this movie never happened. And as for Mr. Awesome his score was recognized and has been beaten, he just wont admit it. Watch Chasing ghost for a real documentary.

I never understood why people criticized Billy so much for his treatment of steve Wiebe in this film(whether fake or not)..Billys a competitor theres no reason he has to be friendly with someone hes competing with...Ali and Frazier werent friends neither were Bird or Magic until long after they competed against one another...

reply

Just because they are not friends does not mean they are automatically enemies. There is such a thing as sportsmanship, and treating your opponent like an inferior person is NOT going to help your image.

reply

Ali and Frazier were friends outside of the ring, and Frazier actually lent Ali money while he was kicked out of boxing for not participating in the Vietnam war. And this movie is great and you naysayers need to "get over it". Cinema verite it is not, but neither are you

reply

No they weren't...LOL! Frazier went to his death bed wondering why Ali said all the hurtful things he did about him, and was openly bitter towards Ali until he died. Ali tried to tell him to let it go and that it was all just about hyping the fights, but Joe was truly hurt, he stated so in MANY interviews and NEVER accepted ANY apologies from Ali, nor did he EVER forgive Ali for saying what he did to hype those fights!

reply

Frazier, pretty famously, took credit for the condition that Ali finds himself in now.

There's a vast difference between not being friendly and being a vastly arrogant douche.

Watch both KOK and CG. But KOK is more character driven I think. With two people. As with, CG it is like that. But it shows very little of the other participants professional and personal lives. Unlike KOK, where it shows Billy and Steve's professional and personal lives.

reply

OK, I'll just head over to Amazon.com and pick up a copy of CG on DVD, like I did with KOK three years ago.

Oh, wait...

=) Chasing Ghost was awesome.

its not "fake", im not going to get in to movie theory with you now but do some research of the concept of truth in documentary film. there's plenty of great books on the subject; and the movie was very well edited, any editing process manipulates the truth, there trying to tell a story which they did very well.

reply

Yes, as I understand it from knowledgeable people the events are taken so far out of context as to make up events.

As a friend just explained:

When Billy drives away at the restaurant to avoid Steve Wiebe who is inside, he really goes around the corner to park. Then goes inside and eats. And pays for dinner.

When Billy is in the arcade and won't talk to Steve, he really did. They just edited it out.

Friend said Walter Day posted a nice long post about all of the inaccuracies that make up the plot, but unfairly hurt Billy Mitchel.

reply

I still like KOK

reply

You know I've been on and off of this board since it started, and i read all the alledge things that were edited out. Even if Billy did eventually go in and talk to steve and eat, caught right on tape is Steve Sanders saying to the camera before Billy drove up "Mark and Steve showed up uninvitedly and Billy just won't have anything to do with it." And he said it on the phone while trying to cover up his mouth with a french fry so the camera wouldn't pick it up.

Excellent point. The saddest thing of all was watching Billy use innocent saps like Steve Sanders as his reluctant informants. Sanders doesn't seem like such a bad guy. I think he'd do well to stay away from that despicable snake oil salesman, Mitchell. The corrupting influence Mitchell has on all around him is unmistakable. He has all the makings of a cult leader.

I despise Mitchell!

Billy Mitchell mentions his tag was "USA" - more apt would be "COK"

"When Billy drives away at the restaurant to avoid Steve Wiebe who is inside, he really goes around the corner to park. Then goes inside and eats. And pays for dinner."

That's one account. Another is that Billy avoided going into the restaurant for quite a while before asking the producers of the documentary to pay for the dinner, but let Billy take credit for it. Only then did Billy actually enter the restaurant. Depends on who you believe, really. Although the director of the film claims to have the receipt from that dinner proving that he and his team actually paid for it, not Billy. Not that any of us will likely ever see it, nor should such a thing even be necessary.

I don't doubt that some events were skewed in the editing of this documentary, for the sake of drama. I've never looked at as a 100% factual account. However, Billy and his cohorts haven't proven to be the most trustworthy group around, either. Their smear campaign of this film was filled with all kinds of ludicrous and false claims (as many, if not more than some people claim were in this film), and didn't really do anything to contradict the personal image that he and others feel this film paints him so negatively as. If anything, it only solidified it.

So, like I said, depends on who you believe (or who you believe more, I should say). Personally, I find that the director of this film has been far more believable and consistent in his claims than what I've heard and seen out of the Billy camp.

Then again, I don't really care either way. It's an entertaining film, regardless.

reply

Yeah it was made up for drama. As if Billy would just for no good reason not show up for a live match even though he is only 10 miles away. It made no sense.

reply

So you're saying Billy wanted to be made to look like a douchbag simply for the story narrative. I don't think so.

Look at the hair, the clothes, you can't make that up.

This mindset just baffles me. Sure, no documentary will be able to get you the whole truth. Cutting out insignificant details is one thing. But they just made things up and completely removed important facts from the story.

They lied, they created that storyline out of half truths and omissions, and this documentary stopped resembling anything close to the truth. I'm not sure where you get your notions of the "theory" of truth in documentaries, but this mockumentary doesn't qualify.

@OP

One of the responses above nailed it - there is a huge difference between a manipulated "documentary" and a staged "mocumentary".

Edited for effect or not Billy Mitchell comes off as a colossal douchebag.

And the overt patriotism is nauseating. Eff that guy.

reply

there's only so much that 'Out of context' can change... I don't need to see the uncut footage to know that Brian Kuh is a weirdo and a bit insensitive, and that Billy Mitchell is a pompous arse...

I mean the editing room didn't put Brian Kuh over Weibe's shoulder talking nonsense and being rude during an important game.

I got a c-note that says if I spent considerable time with all of these people - I would come away with the same opinion of them that the film left me with...

I find that documentaries, while skewed in purpose and taking sides, often do give you a really good look at someone because we are all as bad as we can be in our worst moments... jmo

reply

Every documentary that has ever been made has some douche bag on IMDb making threads about how it's fake. Usually for the most ridiculous and idiotic reasons. I can see this movie is no exception.
